Itinerary planning advice between Munich and Bayeux

I'm taking my dad to Europe at the end of next April primarily to see a few war war 2 sites and the D Day area. I am having trouble picking a location to go to between Munich and traveling to Bayeux. We would be leaving Munich early on a Monday and need to be in Bayeux, France either late Wednesday night, or early Thursday morning(9:30 AM) so that we can do one of the all day D Day tours.

There is nothing in particular that interests him in Paris, so looking for other ideas besides that one.

Basic Trip is:

Fly into Munich, be here for a few days with a day trip to Salzburg, Berteschgaden. Looking for suggestions. And then to Bayeux, France for D Day tour (staying 1 or 2 nights in Bayeux area is planned). Head to London, fly out of London.

Are you intending to drive, take the train, or fly between southeast Germany and northwest France?

Son1,

I agree w/Nigel. It would depend how you plan to get around.

but to throw some ideas out there.

Luxembourg/Diekirch. National Museum of Military History Diekirch was recommended to me when i was in Bastogne. But i didnt have time for it.

Bastogne, Beligum. You could easily spend 2 or more days up there depending on what you want to see/do.

happy trails.

Somewhat in between Munich and Bayeux if you are driving...Ardennes forest, Bastogne, Verdun in France (yes, WWI but worth seeing), plus much more. Bayeux is wonderful. Enjoy.

We would be traveling by train to all destinations. I wouldn't be against a flight from Munich to get to Bastogne. Do you think it's worth the time to go there for 1 to 2 days max?

Bastogne is not large, so a day there is adequate. The museum in bastogne is not much, but worth an hour perhaps. We were on a driving tour and had a car to visit the excellent museum in Luxembourg mentioned above. The Ardennes are lovely but you don;t see many foxholes, trenches. Stayed at the Collin hotel http://www.hotel-collin.com/ on the square, great food and excellent breakfast downstairs- spend 2 nights if you go to the museum in Diekircke.
Waterloo might be a detour for you- harder to reach by train- not the same historic period but interesting.

Hello kylewilkinson1. In your three days between Munich and Bayeux, I guess it is not necessary for you to go to World War 2 sites. I recommend : fly from Munich to Paris on Monday. And go to places in France, between Paris and Bayeux. Do you plan to go to the World War 2 museum at Caen ?

There is an American Military Cemetary in St Avold France that has over 10,000 graves of fallen WW2 soldiers. Granted, I had a personal reason to visit, (my great-uncle is burried there) but it was a very moving experience to go through. There is a nice memorial chappel there as well.

There is another Military Cemetary in Luxemburg that has Gen. Patton's grave.

You might also like the Porsche or Mercedes Museums in Stuttgart. I know people are getting tired of me saying this, but the Mercedes museum is fantastic. I am not a huge gear head, but I loved the way that the museum tied together the history of the car with what was going on in the world. When we visited they had the Pope mobile on display:)

You could also go to Nuremburg.
