Itinerary help - Germany plus the Alps (Austria? Switzerland? Dolomites?)

I posted earlier, and since then have narrowed down our scope. Wanted some feedback on days needed and where you would spend the majority of your days. Travelers are two adults and two children (12 and 9, both boys), and we'll be traveling in late July through the first week of August, give or take a couple days on either end - we're somewhat flexible with travel dates within that timeframe.

We are looking at 16-17 days total, including the travel days on either end, so let's work off of 14 days on the ground.

We are thinking that we'll arrive in Frankfurt, and depart from either Vienna or Munich. We're flexible on this, too. Right now it just looks like we can get some reasonable flights going in to Frankfurt and out of Vienna. I can check other combos if you have recommendations.

Now... where to go in between? We have never been to Germany, Austria, Italy, or Switzerland. We have been to the French Alps (Chamonix) for a couple days, but that's our only Alpine experience. We are open to anything, and know that we'll likely be thrilled with wherever we go, and will need to return to see more of these countries in the future.

I would like to see a lot of western and southern Germany - don't know if the Rhine Valley makes sense within our potential itinerary, but would love to see some of the Rhine and/or Mosel Valley, and then work our way to Bavaria, and then experience the alps and/or the Dolomites. I think our kids will be the most enthralled with castles, WWII history, and mountains.

How feasible is to spend 8-9 days in Germany and 5-6 days in the Alps or the Dolomites? Would it be possible to see both the Dolomites and some of either Switzerland OR Austria?

I'm still researching and don't have a good sense of travel times between locations yet. We're assuming we will do some combo of car + train.

Thank you for your advice!

Yes it is possible to put together a sensible itinerary. One thing is that Vienna is kind of out of the way of your central interest in Switzerland, Dolomites (South Tyrol really) and the Tyrol region of Austria. I'd plan on flying home from Munich.

Are you renting a car or taking trains? A car obviously offers a lot more flexibility and would be more cost effective with a group of 4, but all that driving can wear thin pretty quick.

I did a 2 week trip with wife and 2 daughters (ages 19 and 22) in late May / early June 2009 ... weather was great that time of the year ... rented a car in Munich, then to Regensburg, Prague, Vienna, Klagenfurt (awesome castle there). Bled, Ljubljana, Venice, Bolzano, Innsbruck, Reutte (near Neuschwanstein castle), Andechs and back to Munich. A little more east and south than you were looking at, but if you cut out the Bled/LjubLjana/Venice/Bolzano part and went across southern Austria to the Dolomites, you could use those extra 4 or so days to tour more of the southern Germany / Bavaria region. Going to be a great trip wherever you end up going.

Great! My advice is to decide first where you want to go and then look for the best flight options. Too many times I see folks buy their tickets first because they got a great deal and then try to shoe-horn their itinerary to fit it. They think they are saving money, but after they factor in the cost in time and money of back-tracking and sacrificing a place they really wanted to see, the savings are often illusory.

We have never been to Germany, Austria, Italy, or Switzerland.

I adore the Swiss alps, especially in and around the town of Lauterbrunnen. There are lots of activities kids their age would love: hikes, waterfalls, rafting (easy to difficult), luge rides, an awesome castle in Montreux, cable car rides to get up and down the mountains, lake cruises, a great open-air museum, biking along the valley floor.
