Itinerary help - ending in Venice October 27, 2018.

My husband and I are booked on a cruise leaving Venice on Oct 28th. We'd like to explore somewhere in Europe the week before, but have weather concerns. Switzerland looks beautiful, but it sounds like it rains a lot in Oct. Are we better going south to Amalfi or even Nice/Monaco for the first few days? We've been to Venice in 2015, so would love to explore elsewhere. Any ideas would be appreciated. Our flights from US aren't booked yet. Flying home from Rome at end of cruise.

Thanks! Can't wait to hear everyone's thoughts!

I think you are taking a chance with the weather almost anywhere in Europe by late October. It's a roll of the dice. Maybe some places historically have less rain at that exact time of year than others - but who knows?

You might consider winging it. Don't book your whole week. Make a few different plans and follow one. You shouldn't have trouble booking lodgings at the last minute at that time of year, assuming you have an internet device.

If you knew it was going to rain, where would you want to be? I'd guess a town with museums like Florence or Rome. So maybe you could fly into Venice and if it rains, head south to Florence.

If the weather is good? Let me suggest Slovenia or northern Croatia.

Switzerland is beautiful, but very expensive, even more than Germany or Austria.

For October, I would go South for warmer weather. If you haven't been to Rome or Florence, those would be my choices.

If you want to stay in Northern Italy, fly into Milan, explore that city then Verona, Ravenna, or head down to Cinque Terre, Pisa and Lucca before heading on to Venice.

Patti, We've done a Venice to Rome cruise. Do you need information about getting to the cruise port in Venice, or about getting to Rome from the cruise port?

Hello patticampbell4. In October, I think the weather in Austria is not bad. Austria, or Italy, could have rain in October. Austria is not a long distance from Venice.

Hard to help without knowing more about your interests and where you've already been. If this were me, I'd spend the time in Italy, maybe Sicily or around Naples. That would mean a roundtrip flight to Rome and a flight or train within Italy to get to Venice when the "week before" is over.

Or else I'd head to a big city where I haven't been, like Berlin, where there's enough to do inside that weather wouldn't matter much. That would mean flying open jaw into Berlin and home from Rome.

Another possibility would be Greece if that interests you. Good time of year, lots to see, good connections to Athens. Islands might be a little chilly but Athens and mainland would be good.

Given the time of year, you really could wing it if you just knew where to start, i.e. where in Europe to arrive. If Amalfi or Nice/Monaco appeals to you, go for one or the other!
