Itinerary help and open jaw question

Hi Steevites Planning next trip to Europe. Here is one itinerary I am considering -your thoughts welcomed. Also since this is first time I am considering open jaw flight since this trip is very linear, abut how much difference in price would I expect to pay, flying into Budapest and out of Munich ? Trip as currently planned Fly from DC to Budapest 3 nights Train to Vienna 3 nights Train to Salzburg 3 nights-maybe day trip to Hallstatt or Berchtesgadn Train to Fussen 2 nights
Train to Munich for flight home Thanks in advance for your comments, thoughts... Mike DC

Sorry, you'll have to do the math. Simply use the multi cities option on whatever search engine you use to find your flights.

Your itinerary looks pretty good to me - a taste of a bunch of places, but no one-nighters, and no excessively long train rides. Of course, people with a different travel style will not like it, but it very much matches my travel style, so I approve <g>. The "rule" is that open jaw flights cost the average of what the round trips to the two destinations would be. So, if DC to Munich is $700 and DC to Budapest is $800, then your itinerary should be $750. However, like all "rules," this one gets broken with regularity. You have to search yourself. One tip: sometimes, for no clear reason, an open jaw itinerary can cost much less in the opposite direction. So, also check flying into MUC and out of BUD.

Mike, Your Itinerary looks well paced and well organized. As the others mentioned, there are no one night stops and planning 3 nights allows some time for travel between locations. Regarding the open-jaw flights, you can get a good idea by having a look at Travelocity, Expedia, Hipmunk or any of the other online booking services. You could also talk to a Travel Agent. When comparing costs between open-jaw and return flights, be sure to include the time and costs of returning to your starting point. Open-jaw flights often provide more time for touring, since you don't have to spend time returning to the starting point. Are you not spending any time in Munich? There's lots more to see there than in Füssen. If you're only interested in seeing the Castles, that can be done as a day trip from Munich, either on your own or with a group tour (have a look at the Radius Tours website). Happy travels!
