Itinerary advice - Germany Austria Italy 22 days

Hi everyone. This is my first time posting here.
I am planning to visit Europe for first time in September.

Here is my rough plan. I need your opinion on whether it is possible to cover everything. I also want to know about the crowds and weather. Thanks.

I have 24 days.

1 sep. Arrive in Frankfurt

2-4. Munich (reach by train). Day trip to Neuschwanstein castle on last day.

5-6 Salzburg (reach by train)

7-9. Vienna (reach by train)

9th evening - catch nightjet from Vienna to Venice

10-11. Venice

12-14. Bolzano and dolomites (reach Bolzano by train- it takes 4 hrs from Venice)

15-17 Rome. (Reach by train)

  1. Assisi

19-20. Florence

21-23. Pisa and Cinque Terre

23 rd night. Flight back home from Milan (I have to take it from Milan- no flexibility there)

What do you think?

Quite an ambitious plan, maybe too much so. Have you done the research to determine how much time you are in transit on each move?

Going to Bolzano is a really out of the way trek from all the other locations you have chosen. You could easily use those days elsewhere on your journey.

On the 23rd you plan to travel from CT to Milan to get a flight that day? That is HIGHLY risky.

What do you think?

I think you will get home exhausted and not very satisified

Thanks for the inputs.

The transit is never more than 4 hours (except nightjet from Vienna to Venice) according to what I have researched. I plan to travel early morning on the day of checkout and reach the next place by 12. Also will try and book accommodations close to train station in every place.

I agree about Bolzano. Should change it.

On the last day flight is at 2100h from Milan. There are direct buses in morning from La Spezia to Milan Malpensa quoting 4 hrs travel time. Even if it takes six I can make it. Train takes 3 hrs to Milan central from towns in CT.

Also I would love to know about which city passes to buy (or not to buy) in Munich, Salzburg, Vienna, Venice, Rome and Florence. I could see that Vienna and Salzburg are good deals, also Rome I guess. Rest I am not too sure.

Thanks.

It's very doable...but quite a bit of get up and go every few days. If you have not experienced that sort of travel it might start to wear on you after a few days. One thing to consider is how/where you will do laundry.
But it's well thought out and logical...except Bolzano/Dolomites as has already been pointed out.
I would try to get another few days in Rome..there is enough there to keep you very occupied..

Hi. I have done the similar thing in Cambodia and Vietnam for around 20 days with transit being much more unpredictable and longer there. I think I should be able to manage this in Europe.

I know it sound silly but if I have to choose between Vienna and Dolomites what is better? I was thinking that Dolomites would be a nice change in between so many churches/palaces/museums. I can go south from Salzburg and reach Venice via Dolomites (skip Vienna)

Also if anyone could help me regarding the passes. It is just so difficult to decide.

Hi.

I did some research and I have changed the plan to include Lake Bled between Vienna and Venice. I will stay for 3 days and also see Julian Alps. Also skipping Assisi. Difficult to justify one day stay there. Also it is not a good day trip from any city.

Frankfurt, Germany
— 1 Sep

Munich, Germany
— 2-5 sep

Salzburg, Austria
— 5-7 sep

Vienna, Austria
— 7-10 Sep

Bled, Slovenia and Julian Alps
— 10-13Sep

Venice, Italy
— 13-15 Sep

Rome, Italy
— 15-18 Sep

Florence, Italy
— 18-20 Sep

Cinque Terre, Italy
— 20-23 Sep

Milan, Italy
— departure on 23rd

The order of travel in Italy seems illogical.
From Bolzano it would make sense to reach Florence as a next destination. From there you would reach Assisi if you wish. Then Rome. Pisa and Cinque Terre you would reach on your way to Milano.

Bolzano to Rome is a 4 hr ride. I would prefer reaching Rome and then climbing north. Saves me trips up and down. The bad thing is that my flight has to be from Milan.
