Italy in early Jan

We would like to travel to Cinque Terra and Tuscany the first of January. Is it cold and deary or would it a good time to go. We have been to both places in the fall, but we are itching to go somewhere the first of January Thanks Ted

Why not head down south, maybe fly into Napoli, and visit Napoli, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast? Average temp in Sorrento in January runs about 55 degrees. Sicily might be nice, too.

Any off season, cool weather travel can be great, but usually best if focused on activities related to the working locals not involved in the tourist industry. Rome, for instance is wonderful, still a good number of tourists, but not the crush seen in the summer, and of course, all of the museums are open as well as restaurants and shops for the locals as well as what tourists there are. The CT, and even Tuscany (the smaller towns focused on the tourist industry) will be in low gear, a good share of the restaurants, shops, and hotels closed. A visit can still be nice, but check ahead and inquire, do not trust a guide book written for the high season.
