I am in need of some advice from all you well traveled folks out there. A friend and I are spending 2 1/2 weeks traveling in Northern Italy and Switzerland starting the beginning of September. My plan is to fly into Venice for 2 nights, then Florence/Tuscany for 4 nights, Lake Como 2 nights then up into Switzerland. I need some advice on my Italy itinerary, does that seem like an adequate amount of time in each place? My next question is what are the "must-stop" places in Switzerland taking the train up from Lake Como and ultimately ending in Geneva if we have 7 nights to spend? Thanks!
Ashleigh,
Your Itinerary sounds reasonable, but keep in mind that you'll need to allow adequate time for travel between locations. In some cases, the travel time will be about half a day.
Which town were you planning to stay in while visiting Lago di Como?
It's difficult to specify "must stop" locations in Switzerland, as your interests may be different from mine. However, one area that I'd strongly suggest is the Berner Oberland and Lauterbrunnen Valley. The towns of Murren and Gimmelwald are big favourites with many here. With seven nights you could also stop in Lucerne for a few nights. It's also a beautiful city. I'm assuming you're flying home from Geneva?
Happy travels!
2 nights in Venice - your first destination after a longhaul flight, doesn't sound like enough to me. But I haven't been to Switzerland and I love Venice.
