Hi Dick,
We are doing almost the exact same trip in April 2010. We are flying into Florence, staying for awhile, and then heading to Venice for a 7 day Greek cruise. I know that you have read this on this board many times, but my best advice is to pack light. You dont want to carry a bunch of bags through Venice.
We downloaded all of Rick's tours onto our IPod Touch and I think that is a great tip for visiting Venice. (or download to any MP3 player)

Richard - In Tuscany three miles from San Gimignano is a fabulous B&B called Casolare di Libbiano (Http://www.CasolareLibbiano.It) A wonderful property - Berta and her husband Andrea take excellent care of you - AND - it is so close to Siena, Volterra, and San Gimignano!!
In Venice my choice for years has been The Hotel Casanova- Directly behind the Piazza San Marco and so close to all the action. Dario and Stefano are friends of mine and treat their customers very well - An excellent Breakfast Buffet also! Less than 5 minutes to the ship's terminal!!
