It's Not Europe But...

Two great exhibitions are opening in Atlanta this week-end. One is Tutankahamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs and the other is The First Emperor: China's TerraCotta Warriors." They are both wonderful exhibits!

Saw the Terra Cotta warriors exhibit when it was in Budapest and found it a bit disappointing. It was set up so visitors were at the same level as the hundred or so statues and you could only walk along the front row. Maybe that's why it didn't have the impact I was expecting. That was last July, so maybe it has been improved. Tut is another story - if the exhibit is even only a fraction as good as the one at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, it will still be amazing to see.

Frank, Tut is pretty disappointing, too. We saw it in Los Angeles in 05 (if it's the same one) and were really underwhelmed with how much we saw. Of course, part of the problem was all of the school groups running wild! : 0

I saw the Terracotta in London and thought it was very well done. Didn't have the problem mentioned in the LA exhibit.

I will be attending this one, but I think it's somewhat smaller then the one in London.

I saw the Xian Terra Cotta Warrriors in Paris this July,, I admit to being a tad underwhelmed, but I think that is to be expected if one has seen photos of them insitu. My mom saw them in China , insitu and was overwhelmed with the vast display, but of course the travelling exhibits are only so many.. its not the same. I did apprieicate seeing them though, I mean, they are just so old!! I did find it a little dissappointing that all explanations were french only( which I could only get gist of ) , a brochure or audio guide option in english would have been nice.

I have not seen the Tut exhibit, but I would love to, and even a portion of the artifacts would be wonderful to see.

I admit that I expected an "army" of terracotta warriors in the Atlanta exhibit but there are only about 16 or so however--you can get very close to them. The detail on each figure is amazing!

I LOVE the Tutankahamun exhibit--there are many large statues of Egyptian pharaohs included as well as artifacts from Tut's tomb. I'm an Egyptologist "wanna-be"--I think that it's a wonderful exhibition

I visited the Terra Cotta Warriors in Paris last spring. Wherever they are, they are worth seeing.

Thanks to Pat we were also able to see the Warriors in Paris last May and loved it. It probably helped that we realized before going that the full effect would only be available in situ.

It is great to be able to visit the countries of the artifacts' origin.....The atmosphere in Cairo can never be replicated elsewhere--it's indescribable!

Tutankahamun had lots of stuff in his tomb--if I remember right, Howard Carter found more than 5,000 objects when he discovered the tomb in 1922! There are also many artifacts in the Cairo Museum including his golden mummy mask.

I've got my tickets already! We bought a membership to the High Museum (where the TerraCotta warriors are) last year, and it expires the end of this month!

Odd, according to internet info, the King Tut exhibit is on simultaneously in Atlanta and in Dallas. How does that happen?

There is also a Popeii and Herculaneum exhibit in the Smithsonian National Gallery of Art that is on loan from Europe for a short time. Best part is it's free.

It was much more than I was expecting.
