Issues getting Romanian currency?

Hey group,
I had an interesting experience yesterday. I went to my bank to exchange some dollars for Romanian Leu and surprisingly Chase bank did not carry them. I have to try a different bank, but I thought it was interesting that a bank as big as Chase did not carry that currency, nor could it get any. Has anyone else had issues getting a specific currency? What did you do? I'm going to try a few other banks on Monday, and if that doesn't work then try at the airport prior to leaving next week.

I was just very surprised.

It doesn't surprise me. It is a minor currency and most banks, even big ones, don't have much of a currency operation. This is a case when an on-line service would work better or find a location of Am Express currency office. You don't need much beyond an amount equal to about a hundred US to get started.

Just use your ATM at the airport when you land. I had no problem getting money my 12 days in Romania

You could ask your bank to order some Romanian currency for you but there's an overnight delivery charge and possibly other fees. Going from bank to bank will probably be an exercise in frustration. Best to get some currency when you arrive at the airport in Romania.

If you live near a Wells Fargo bank, they carry Leu. Since it is not a real common currency, they might have to order it from a main branch, but that should only take a day. Wells Fargo marks it up alot, about 17% (today's Interbank rate is $0.31097/Leu; Wells Fargo's rate is $0.3653/Leu), but it's nice to have a few Leu for immediate expenses in case something happens to your ATM transaction.

It's been several years, but when we arrived in Bucharest by train, we went to an ATM at a bank just a block from the station and withdrew cash with no problem. We hadn't needed Romanian currently up to that point. Due to the exchange rate, it was an unusal experience to be withdrawing such large denominations -- we were instantly "millionaires!"

Our preference is always to use the ATMs for local cash; see also http://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/money/cash-tips. If you want to bring some cash as an emergency back-up plan, you can bring small bills in dollars in your moneybelt, and some local agency will change them for equally as bad a rate as your US bank will give you.
