We will be traveling from Barcelona to Rome and wonder if it would be a good idea to take the ferry and stop in Corsica and or Sardinia or better if we just did the Balearic Islands off Spain and then fly to Rome? If we stopped in Corsica and/or Sardinia, we would spend a few days in each.
The ferry between Barcelona and Rome is quite an interesting one. We took it two years ago. The outside Junior Suites are very nice cabins, although the ship is very Italian in style (so all pretty functional, basic). Food was ok, however, the Latte Macchiatto they serve at the pool bar (although the pool hardly ever carries water) is so much better than any other such beverage I've ever had anywhere in the world, maybe apart from downtown Rome. Wifi on board seems to never work, but they will blame it to the weather only on that particular cruise you take. But then again, such a 24 hours cruise is for relaxation anyway.
The boat stops in Porto Torres on Sardinia. The island is beautiful but you might actually need a rental car to see it all. Althernatively take the short ferry boat over to Bonifacio on Corsica island - the town is stunning. From there or from nearby Porto Vecchio there are ferries back to Civitavecchia (Rome)...
