Is Skype really as easy as it seems?

I am responsible for checking the voicemail for two organizations, besides my home phone. Getting Skype and "calling" those phones from Europe sounds like it would be easier than recruiting people to help and teaching them the remote access for the voicemail.

So, do I have it right: I sign up, download Skype to my iPod Touch and/or my netbook, buy some Skype credit, and when I have wifi access in Europe, just log in and "call"?

(It seems like the service has gotten to be so ubiquitous that there aren't any up-to-date how-to's for the uninitiated!)

You do have to have a microphone as the Ipod Touch does not have one built in.

When you install Skype, you have the opportunity to do a test call before you buy anything. This makes sure everything is set up correctly. Make sure the microphone is plugged in.

If it's a second or third generation Ipod Touch over 8 GB, I believe all the ear buds that came with them have microphones on the cords. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

Oh, I should say I had previously downloaded Skype to my computer and registered an account there. Then, when I downloaded the app onto my Itouch, all I had to do was log in. Much easier.

The iPod Touch does not come with a mic on its headphones. Only the iPhone and iPod shuffle do. That said, you can try to buy a pair of mic-ed headphones and plugging them into an iTouch. If you have a netbook at your disposal, just use that.

And yes, Skype is really easy to use. Install, create an account, and sign in. If you are calling from computer to computer, it's free. If there is a phone on either end (or both), then you need to pay.

The iPod Touch 3rd generation 32GB and 64GB DO come with mic headphones, as they have the option of voice command.

I got someone else's unwanted Apple mic headphones for my puny 8GB iPod Touch 2nd Generation and I use Skype in the USA easily anywhere there is decent wifi. I have not tried calling to/from out of the country so I don't know what bugs there might be in that system, but since it's all internet based and internet is pretty much the same everywhere, it must be pretty easy as long as you know the numbers to dial.

I should have added to my previous post that I have the 3rd generation Ipod Touch 32GB and my ear buds have the microphone.

BTW--I hated the buds in my ear because they kept falling out. Then I got Budfits and they now stay in. The over the ear part is so light I hardly notice it.

OP here. I forgot to say earlier that I had purchased a headset (headphones and mic combo) a while back, since my Touch is the older one. So as long as it works ...

I did it! Thanks for the advice and encouragement.

But I forgot that my headset is not an in/out combo with one plug, like the Apple earbuds-with-mic. So it's fine with hubby's netbook, but not my Touch or my HP Mini (which has only one in/out audio port). Still, we're ahead of where we were a couple of hours ago.

Anna, only the third generation itouch with 16 or 32 GB came with a microphone. It's very tiny. If you don't know it's there, you'd miss it.

That's odd, my friend's 3rd Gen iTouch came with regular headphones and while it did have speakers, it had no mic. Are we on 4th Gen now? I guess I stopped paying attention when I got my iPhone.
