Going to Provence in August and was considering renting an apt. Are the nights too hot that I will be needing air conditioning? Or are the nights cool enough? Are there bugs at night or can you leave your windows open?
Where in Provence? Is the apartment on a top floor that takes the brunt of then sun's heat? Is it in a city? In any case, most of
Provence is cooler than most of Florida.
I utterly LOATHE heat, and I have been in Provence in August. It was totally bearable at night. Got bloody hot most days, but seemed to cool off nicely at night. And I recall a nice breeze. I do not recall insects of the "flying at night and biting you" kind. I stayed in a place with no A/C, and was not miserable. It is do-able, especially if the up charge for A/C means you have to scrimp on something else.
I had the same experience as Kira. Hot days, comfortable nights. Our hotels had no a/c and I kept my windows open and didn't notice any bugs.
Yes, where will you be?
I spent 3 days in a former Relais du Silence in the middle of lavender fields in Jul a few years ago and love AC. It was not unbearable to sightsee in the cities but it was heavenly to turn on the AC as soon as we hopped in the car.
As others have mentioned, temperatures vary in Provence, BUT on the whole it's a med climate which means nights tend to cool more in summer than in continental climates. That said, I've had a few 'too warm for my taste' nights without AC in Provence, but I'm used to cool nights. You're from FL so it might feel just fine to you. It's also generally significantly less humid in Provence than in FL.
