Is a smoke detector necessary?

I am planning a 6 week trip for my family (husband and 2 boys 12 & 15) We will be in the UK, Italy, Switzerland and France. (I have only been to Italy before.) We will be staying in low cost family-run lodging (but not hostels) and renting apartments in Rome, the Cinque Terre and Paris. Are smoke detectors standard equipment in those places? I am a little bit paranoid about fire safety, especially since we have the kids with us. At the same time I don't want to haul unnecessary things since we are each taking just a carry-on and a day pack for the 6 week trip. Thanks.

Every place I have stayed in Europe in recent years (small B&Bs) has had smoke detectors. And your kids are teens, not little, so they should be able to manage themselves in an emergency situation. I wouldn't worry about carrying a smoke detector.
