Ireland for Seniors and Last Minute Flight Scheduling

Somewhere I noticed that seniors traveling in Ireland by ground get a discount and maybe free travel in some cases. What's that about?

I'll likely use Aer Lingus to travel, as per another post, between London and Dublin, but will I be OK in making reservations only days in advance or even a day in advance for my trip in mid-Nov.? I might want to bail out if weather along the west coast becomes an issue.

The closer you get to departure date, the more tickets tend to cost, but if you are OK with paying it, it probably won't be a problem to wait to buy your tickets. As for the free travel, I believe that seniors have access to free rail travel, but I'm not sure under what rules. It might only apply to residents, not tourists.

This is what I found after doing a search...OLDER TOURISTS will enjoy free rail travel around the State following the introduction of a new scheme yesterday.

All overseas visitors aged 66 or over, from anywhere in the world, will be able to benefit from unlimited travel on mainline, Dart and commuter trains in the scheme, developed by Fáilte Ireland in conjunction with Iarnród Éireann.

The scheme was announced by the Government as part of the budget in December, in a bid to increase overseas visitor numbers.

It is similar to the free travel scheme for Irish people aged 66 and over, but does not include free bus or Luas travel.

It also differs from the scheme for Irish residents when it comes to cross-Border travel. Irish senior citizens travelling from Dublin to Belfast are entitled to free rail travel for the entire journey, but overseas visitors will only be entitled to free travel for the portion of their journey in this State. They will have to purchase a ticket for the remainder of their trip, from Dundalk onwards.

I qualify. :-)
Sounds good. What is Luas travel?

Does Britain have anything like this?

What are penalties like on Aer Lingus, if you cancel and reschedule?

You should find that information on Aer Lingus' website.
