ipods, NintendoDS, DVD players, etc. on airplane.

Suggestions for charging on the airplane for long flights? What do I need.

You can't as a practical matter. Just bring multiple batteries. The only thing I could possibly think of is if your plane has outlets for laptops and you have a plug converter (it looks like one you'd put in a car cigarette lighter, about $50-75 at any travel store) you might be able to charge that way. However, not all planes have this feature, especially in economy class.

I know that on Cathay pacific (what I am flying on) they have the ports on each seat (I found that out at www.seatguru.com) so I will just connect my USB cord for my ipod in that :)

Maybe that website could help you too :)

Check your airline before buying anything!

As an example, Air Canada has outfitted almost every plane with USB charging and 110 outlets to every seat. Lots of airlines are doing this now...

We are bringing an IPod for podcasts as well as music while in Europe, but on plane I think it is important to sleep, and most flights from our area( same as you, west coast)leave in early evening so for us it is dinner , and then trying to go to sleep.

we are looking for a solar recharger for daughters hand held video game.

If you have a Nintendo GBA or DS (the older version, not the Lite) you can use something called a Cellboost which is an external battery pack that gives you an extra 6 hours of battery life.

There are similar external batteries for ipods as others have mentioned.

For my iPod, I bought a tiny charger which takes 2 AA batteries. I paid under $10 for it. It works very well. As soon as I got to my hotel, I plugged in my regular charger with the appropriate adapter plug and charged it nightly.

My son and husband are game system fans, and we always make sure it is charged up when we get on the plane. My dh made it all the way from Atlanta to Munich and then on to Regensburg on one PSP charge, and my son made it Atlanta to London with a GameBoy on one charge. This trip my son is taking the GameBoy AND PSP - we wouldn't want to spend any down time without beeping electronics :-).

Gomadic sells a charger that takes 4 AA batteries and can charge anything. The tips (connectors) are interchangeable and you can order whichever ones you need.

Be prepared for the passenger in the next seat to be somewhat annoyed with the beeps, jabbing elbows etc. Aeroplanes these days had plenty of inflight entertainment, even a little light for peaceful reading of a book.
