Ipod Touch Security

I am planning on taking my Ipod Touch with me on our upcoming trip to Europe. Any suggestions on how to keep it secure? With all the discussion about money belts, I am concerned.

I keep my Ipod touch in the media pocket in my ScotteVest Jacket and run the earphones through the ScotteVest system.

How would you keep your camera secure? I wouldn't be concerned. Just use your common sense, keep it out of sight when not using it. If you use a day bag keep it in there.

Warren,

I've been travelling with an IPod Touch for several years and so far haven't had any problems. As the previous reply mentioned, keep the device out of sight as much as possible when out in public. Don't wander about the streets of large European cities focusing on the music and not being aware of what's happening around you.

I'd also suggest replacing the standard white headphones with something more "generic". There were some reports a few years ago of a wave of "snatch and grab" thefts, especially in Paris and Rome. See redtape.msnbc.com/2007/10/theres-an-icrim.html for one example. I haven't heard of similar instances lately.

Carrying your IPod Touch in a Money Belt probably wouldn't be the best idea. The interior of Money Belts tend to get a bit "damp" at times due to perspiration, so the device could be damaged. If I'm going to store my Passport in the belt, I always place it in a zip-lok bag.

Happy travels!

Thanks Kim for bringing up the Scottevest jacket! I was going to ask if anyone wears that when traveling. It sounds like you really like it, so I should order one for my Spain trip in October! I'll really need that there! Also I like this question because I was thinking of getting an Ipod Touch myself! I'll follow Kim's advice about the vest. This is what I like about this forum. I got two answers in one thread! Thanks!

Do you not find the ScotteVest system warm? I used a fanny pack for camera etc and never had a problem...was I just lucky?

Very lucky.

I was once with a group of people in Florence walking near the Duomo when a couple of shopkeepers starting yelling and pointing at us. It seems a young pickpocket, perhaps 10 years old, was literally in the middle of our group with his hand in a woman's fanny pack. None of us saw him. If the shopkeepers hadn't yelled, the thief would have gotten her wallet, camera, etc.

There are now several versions of the ScotteVest. There are even Summer jacket versions and a version that folds into its own pocket. Most have the pocket that fits the Ipod Touch and the earbud system.

My version has the zip off sleeves. They also sell vests.

I think that there is a version for every season now.

Yes, I love my Scottevest jacket.

I didn't use the fanny pack for my money or passport...I had a neck wallet for that. I just used it for my camera, kleenex, map etc. I like my camera handy...I take a lot of pics.
