What apps (other than Rick's) have you downloaded to your ipod that are useful for travel? I will be in Paris for four weeks, and will have wifi in my apartment.
Skype. My banks apps to check balances. Angry Birds.
Connie, Some of the App's that I use during travels are: > Currency Converter > Paris Metro > French Dictionary > Bank access App (specifically for the Bank I use) You'll probably find that using an iPod Touch for extensive web browsing or E-mail gets to be very tedious, very quickly. I've found that it's fine for "light duty use" or when nothing else is available, but the small keyboard and screen are difficult for extended use. That's one of the reasons I now travel with a Netbook. Happy travels!
Thanks Richard and Ken-- great ideas. I will add those things. My husband will be bringing his netbook, but that will stay in the apartment, while the touch will go out with us when we explore the city.
Connie, Downloading files onto an iPod Touch is extremely easy. You don't need a PC or a Mac to do that, although you WILL need to register your account and credit card information with iTunes prior to making any purchases. You can do that via iTunes (which you may have to download on a PC - that's always provided on Mac's so I've never had to download). Simply press the App Store icon on the iPod. You'll see Menus along the bottom for "Featured - Categories - Search - Updates" etc. You can search for a specific App or browse the "Travel" category to find App's that you want. If you click on a particular App and then scroll down to the bottom, there are sample screen shots and reviews (which are sometimes interesting, but I tend to take them with a "grain of salt"). When you find something you like, simply click the "Buy" button at the top right, enter your account Password and it will download immediately (provided you have a Wi-Fi connection). Although some App's are free, I believe you still have to be registered to download? Cheers!
Hi Connie, I found this post to be very helpful. It is called "Pack Information on an iPod Touch." http://www.slowtrav.com/europe/travel_with_ipod_touch.htm
Thanks for the web site suggestion. It was very interesting. Do you know how a PC (I don't have a Mac) can be used to download files onto an iPod touch (the latest generation?) As you have probably guessed, I don't know a lot about computers.
One app that we find useful is 'Escargo', which is a French menu translator.
Connie,
Download through Itunes.
A comment about a specific app: we used the Paris Metro app by Presselite which has a journey planning tool. This allows one to enter their originating and destination stations and it presents the best route. Pretty cool when train changes are required. Enjoy Paris.
Galen, I also use the Paris Metro and London Tube App's by Presselite, and they're awesome! Definitely two of the best and most useful App's that I have. I have the "automatic notificatons" (RE: line closures, etc.) switched off at the moment, but will re-activate those when travelling.
Thanks Ken and Galen. Have a happy 4th!
And thanks to Tom as well! That app will come in very handy!
Connie, Thanks for the good wishes. I DID have a happy July 1st! Happy 4th to you.
Can the metro map and menu translation apps be used off-line? If not, you would have to anticipate your destinations or menu items while in a wifi spot. Last year I bought an Italian translation app that supposedly worked off-line. I was very disappointed to find it did not work that way. A waste of money in my opinion.
Connie,
If you look on the Graffiti Wall under Planning and Packing > iPod and other MP3 player tips, there are quite a few iPod Touch suggestions on the first page of posts.
Great suggestion Nancy, I didn't even think to look there.
