We are going to Rome for 3 days then flying to Barcelona for a 7 day cruise and I would like to be able to use my iPhone to make local calls (taxi's, restaurants, etc...) and more so for the data plan so as to get online support. Any suggestions?
This subject has been talked about a lot in the past few weeks. I've posted numerous things. I won't repeat everything here, but using a phone other than an iPhone in Europe is easy. Using an iPhone is a little more complicated. For example, you have to have the phone unlocked and jailbroken. Blame Apple. You can roam on AT&T if that is the carrier you use here. If your phone is from Verizon, it won't work overseas. (The Verizon iPhone may actually have the right type radio for use, but I don't think it has been activated by Apple and Verizon.) If your carrier is AT&T, it will cost a small fortune to data roam. It won't be cheap to use it to make local calls. There are companies that sell phone service overseas, and they may be cheaper than what you'd get from a U.S. carrier, but that really depends on what your usage is. For data, however, they may not be cheaper. You can get data service from iphonetrip.com, but it costs about $15 a day. If you can live with that, this may be an easy choice for you. Not sure what they charge for calls, but it isn't as cheap as the following route. The cheapest option is to buy a local SIM from one of the countries you visit. Because you have an iPhone (assuming you can get it to work), you'll need the mini or micro-SIM that the iPhone uses. Because they sell iPhones in Europe, many companies should have them. Finally, because you are on a cruise, all bets are off. Unless you can get service to something on shore, any connection you get through the cruise ship will be super expensive. I don't think you'll want to roam on the cruise line.
Continued . . . . You might do a search of recent posts to read more. (One of the threads highlighted in bold at the top of the forum explains how to use Google's advanced search features to do this.) Alternative: Buy a cheap local prepaid phone and use that to make calls and then use wifi on your iPhone for data.
