iphone ipad

I'm thinking of buying an ipad before traveling. What type of service coverage do I need? Plus I think I can use the same adaptor for both plus the converter?

Candice, Could you clarify one point - are you planning to travel with both an iPhone and an iPad? What are you planning to use the iPhone for? It may or may not even work in Europe, depending on which model you're using and which carrier you're with. Regarding the iPad, a Wi-Fi only model should suffice. There's really no benefit to using a Wi-Fi plus 3G model. Getting a SIM card that allows data use is often a bit complicated and expensive. There's really no need for data unless you need data when you're away from the Hotel, and are prepared to pay for the convenience. "Plus I think I can use the same adaptor for both plus the converter?" Could you clarify that? You can use the same Plug Adapters for both, but you'll only need the Chargers that were supplied with each device. You won't need a Voltage Converter. You can verify that by checking the "Input Voltage" ratings on the Chargers. They should state "Input 100-240 VAC. Which countries will you be travelling in? Note that the Plug Adapters for the UK are different from those used on the continent. One other point to mention. Were you planning to take only one of the Apple Chargers? I'd suggest taking both - they're small, light and easy to travel with and it's always good to have a "backup". The iPad Charger should also work with the iPhone BUT the iPhone Charger does not have sufficient capacity to charge the iPad (you'll probably find that the iPad Charger is slightly larger). Happy travels!

I have an iPad and an iPhone, and I have never missed having a 3G connection on the iPad. It's too large for me to lug about when I am out every day when traveling (I have small shoulders that tire easily), so I use my iPhone on wifi if I need data while I am out. I use the iPad with wifi if the hotel has it, or just for entertainment purposes (TV shows, Kindle) on the plane or at down moments in the hotel.

I used my iPad 2 last year. I turned off the 3G and only used wifi. Data is expensive in Europe. Every place I stayed had wifi, although it didn't work very well at the hotel in Arles. I never missed having the 3G. I did not take it out and about with me. I did carry my iPod Touch during the day in case I needed to look something up. I don't recall even needing to do that.

As others have stated, you don't need an voltage converter for either, just the plug adaptor for the part of Europe you'll be in ( eg 3 prong for UK, 2 prong for continental Europe, etc). Yes, the cable for your iPhone works on your iPad, and vice versa. You'll find that WiFi access is in many many places these days, and you should have no trouble finding a place to connect to the Net with your iPhone. IF you decide to get an international data package on your iPhone ( personally I don't think its necessary, given the cost, and considering the prevalence of free WiFi ...install Skype instead and you have a great option for calls ), you wouldn't need a package for your iPad. Simply set up a "Hotspot" on your iPhone ( Settings - Hotspot ), and use the WiFi setting on your iPad to connect to your phones " mini WiFi network", which is basically what the Hotspot is...
But as suggested, leave the iPad in your hotel and use your iPhone while out and about...

One charger can be used for both the iPhone and the iPad, but you might find the iPhone charger does not charge the iPad. Try it at home. I use my iPad charger to charge my iPad and iPod Touch.

I liked the ipad to download my photos taken during the day. It is fun at the end of the day with a good beer or glass of wine, to look at your daily photos on a large screen. makes it easy to send emailed "post cards" to people too, from the ipad especially with your nice camera instead of the basic photos taken with an iphone.
