Does anyone have an economical solution to using iPhone 4s in England, France, Italy and Spain? My disabled friend and I are traveling together and at times will be going to different places and will want to talk to be sure she is safe. Thanks
If you keep your total calls to fewer than 20-30 minutes, you won't pay much extra. Text messages work well too. If there is internet, you can facetime for no charge. Or, just sign up for international plan for the month are you traveling and cancel when you get home. You should set your use timer to "0" so you can watch how much time you use if you use the phone to reach each other.
marilyn, It would help to know which cell network you're with in the U.S., as the options will differ slightly. Is your friend also using an iPhone 4S? The fact that you're travelling with an iPhone means you'll have to be extremely careful to avoid expensive data roaming charges, which can be HUGE! A traveller from Vancouver took an iPhone abroad last year, and returned home to find a $35,000 bill waiting in the mailbox! If you could provide some further information, it would be easier to make more specific suggestions. The best method might be to leave the Cellular Data Roaming switched "off" and use text most of the time, as that's usually the most cost-effective means of communicating. If you need to check E-mail or check the internet, do that only using Wi-Fi. Cheers!
I just came back from Madrid, London and Paris. I would stand near the entrance of some cafes and restaurants to use their wifi to check email, make skype voice calls and facetime. All McDonalds, KFC and Starbucks have free wifi. In London, for the rest of this summer, many of the larger tube stations have free wifi courtesy of VirginMedia. May not be the most convenient, trying to find such a cafe/restaurant but it was free :)
