I'd like to use my iPhone 5 in Europe so that I don't have to carry multiple electronics (for convenience, safety, and costs). Unfortunately, my provider won't unlock my phone without me buying out my contract (a few hundred US dollars!), so I've decided to take the route of "jailbreaking" my phone. I was wondering if anyone had tried to do this and how reliable was it? Did you encounter any issues ranging from reliability to security (of, say, personal information stored on your iPhone)? Update: I'm with AT&T. I'll be in Europe for several months.
Alan, I don't have any information on "jailbreaking" as I bought my iPhone unlocked from Apple. One point to note is that if you update the OS or whatever, the phone may "re-lock". Which cellular network are you with? Have you considered buying "travel packs" and just roaming with your home network? Good luck!
I've not tried to jailbreak my phone, but I do have the misfortune of having to manage telecom stuff in my job. One piece of advice I'd give anyone that gets a undesirable answer from a telco is to try calling again. The carriers are so disorganized that it's easy to get completely difference answers from different agents.
Alan, Thanks for the clarification. Hopefully your stay in Europe won't exceed 90 days, unless you've already addressed the question of the Schengen Visa. I agree with the previous suggestion - talk to another staff member as you may get a completely different answer. How long have you had the iPhone 5? How long is your contract? Since the cost of phones is usually subsidized over the term of the contract, you may be able to simply pay for the phone and they will then unlock it. These websites may offer some answers: www.att.com/deviceunlock/client/en_US/? http://iphone5newsblog.com/2013/09/12/how-to-factory-unlock-your-iphone-5-without-delay/ Of course, you'll have to continue paying your monthly contract fee during the time you're in Europe. I've found the same thing as Joe mentioned. They cell networks seem to give these kids a few days training and then they're supposedly "experts" on cellular communications, able to correctly answer any customer queries on both technical and service plan matters. In many cases, that concept doesn't work as well in practice. I should add however that there are a few that really do know what they're talking about (including one young lady at a cell shop here). Good luck and happy travels!
Jailbreaking is different than unlocking. Jailbreaking lets you install apps from sources than apple. Unlocking lets you use a non AT&T SIM in your phone. You can find instructions online or look for a little independent phone shop that will unlock your phone for a fee.
Jailbreaking is fine, as long as whoever does it knows what they're doing. In my experience, the only restriction is that when you update your OS (say, you just downloaded the new iOS 7), the phone becomes locked again. Thus, if you jailbreak your phone, do not update the OS until after your trip.
I have an AT&T iPhone 5, I just google unlock iPhone and it was done. I paid $10 for it to be done. basically you pay the fee and there is stuff done behind the scenes. You back up your phone then plug it into itunes and do a sync and viola... Its unlocked.
