iPad movies

OK, I realize this is more of a tech question, but we were hoping to download a movie onto our ipad for our flight. I know we can rent a movie from itunes, but I was hoping to take a DVD we own, and somehow download it on our iMac and then onto our ipad. Can it be done?

Yep, but you'd need a program that would rip and convert it for the ipad. I don't know the free programs that do it, hopefully someone else can chime in, I use a paid program called DVDfab that I love.

For windows there is a program called DVDfab which rips the DVD/Bluray discs and converts the movie into the mp4 ipad format. I'm not sure what the mac equivalent software is called? Do a Yahoo search for "mac dvd ripper".

Susan/Monte - It's easy. Get "Handbrake" (Google it), a free application for your Mac. Pop your DVD in your Mac's drive (and quit out of the DVD Player app which will probably auto-launch). Launch Handbrake and point it at the DVD. It will scan the disc for a few minutes looking for the actual video (discs employ a variety of means to confuse programs like this, including adding dozens of bogus tracks). Don't worry, Handbrake with figure out the correct track. When it finishes, note where it will save the file, then click the "Start" button, and it will begin encoding the movie. You probably don't need to mess with the settings (the defaults generally work fine) but if you use the "Regular/Normal" preset it will be fine for your ipad. It will take 10-20 minutes depending on various factors. When it's finished, you'll have your movie in .M4V format, which your iPad can read just fine. To get it onto your ipad, open up iTunes, and drag the newly-created M4V file into the Movies section. That moves it into iTunes, but it's still not on your iPad. Plug in your iPad to your mac via USB, then in iTunes, under "Devices" click your iPad; click the "movies" tab, and you should see the new movie you have added to iTunes. Check the movie, and then Sync. Once the sync is done (copied to your ipad), it should appear when you launch the "Videos" app. Before I go on a trip now, I process a dozen DVDs that I get from Netflix, and load them up on the iPad. It sure makes those long flights better. Hope that helps.
