We want to take our iPad2 to these countries, but were astounded at the price ATT charges for its international plan ($25/20mg). I'm guessing 20mb doesn't get you very much. What are people's experiences in these countries with free or low-cost wifi? Is buying a sim once we're there a viable option? Thanks for any advice.
We had free wifi for my iPad almost everywhere we stayed in Italy and Switzerland last summer. I did not enable the 3G so did not pay the high ATT fees, and did not consider buying a SIm there. The wifi option worked fine for us.
Hi Tom,
On the Rick Steves Germany, Austria Switzerland tour (2008) we had wifi at every hotel except one, and of all the hotels we stayed in that had wifi, only one charged for use.
We didn't spend any time in Austria, but we had our iPad in Italy and Switzerland and had wifi only. We kept it in airplane mode the whole time so we didn't get any surprise charges. We also found that some restaurants and cafes had wifi they would give for free when you bought something. If you are going to Rome, go to the website of the public buses and download the map (as a PDF) to iBooks. Very helpful!
