Intra-European budget flights, free checked baggage

Effective immediately low-fares airline http://www.AirBerlin.com allows one free checked-in piece of luggage (up to 23kg) free of additional charges on all intra-European routes.

In a statement a spokesperson of Air Berlin said this was against the trend of unbundling services but it's a move towards more customer service. Already the airline serves free soft drinks and coffee/tea on board of even the shortest flights and passengers get a free chocolate heart made from the renown Berliner chocolate manufacturer Rausch upon leaving the aircraft.

Air Berlin is part of the OneWorld alliance and its network covers Europe from the Canary islands to Moscow, from Helsinki to Turkey.

My wife and I fly often and she has said many times that airlines should check bags for free and charge for taking ones onto the plane.
Now wouldn't that speed up boarding.

But unfortunately airlines have to pay airports for handling checked luggage while carry-on doesn't accrue any real costs to the airline - other than the massive loss of time during boarding I admit.
