Internet usage on 3G network (or similiar in Italy)???

HI All:
I will be traveling to the Italian Riviera for 2 weeks and would like to use my netbook without having to search around for hotspots.

I will be staying at a house without internet connectivity and the owner said he uses 'chiavetta'. Does anyone know what that is?

My questions:
Is there such a thing in Italy as wireless connectivity without having to find a hotspot?
If yes, where would I buy the USB device?
Are the costs prohibitive?
I will be staying in a little town called San Lorenzo della Costa. Will I be able to get connectivity?

Thank you all in advance for any answers!!
Ciao..

atennislover,

The word you quoted is a form of the Italian word for "key", so what the owner is probably referring to is a small device (or key) that fits into the USB port. These devices access the Internet via the Cellular network, so provide completely mobile internet across most of Europe.

I haven't bothered researching the airtime fees that are charged by European cell networks, but I'm sure these are more expensive than a normal "hardwired" connection.

For an example of this type of product, have a look at These products from Rogers (Canada). They will be similar to those offered in the U.S. and in Europe.

I'd suggest that you're VERY clear on what the costs will be.

Happy travels!
