internet on cell phone in France

We need technology help. We are taking an unlocked ATT Tilt 8925 phone (also known as HTC Tytan II) to France to use for running our business in North America for 2 weeks while on holiday. Our thought is to buy and put in a SIM card once there. We will need cheap calling to Canada and internet browsing on the cell network (in addition to using wifi hot spots). Whose SIM card and pay as you go plan should we buy?

Ursula,

I don't have a specific answer for you, but rather a few thoughts on your question.

In France you'll have to choose which network to use - Bouygues Telecom, Orange France or SFR. The latter two also provide 3G service, in addition to basic cell coverage. Unfortunately, it's not likely that your AT&T Phone is equipped with the 2100 MHz frequency band, so you won't be able to access the faster data speeds.

I've heard a few comments on travel sites that the French are a bit "restrictive" in allowing non-residents to purchase Cell plans, but as I've never tried this myself I can't corroborate this?

One solution you might consider is to take a compact Laptop that's equipped with Wi-Fi, in order to access Internet clients. For basic Cell phone coverage you could consider a universal "travel SIM" such as those offered by Cellular Abroad, Mobal or others. However, be sure you're absolutely clear on their rate structure, so that you can predict your costs to some extent.

Continued from last post (the text limit is a darn nuisance!).....

I normally roam with Rogers when travelling, however unless you're a Rogers contract customer this likely won't be an option for you. Also, the costs for use in Europe would be a bit "prohibitive" if you were using this for a lot of incoming calls from clients (incoming in France is about $2.00/minute, plus applicable taxes of course - outgoing in country about $1.00/minute and outgoing to Canada $2.00/minute). The rates I quoted are approximate, and seem to be somewhat similar to those offered to AT&T and T-Mobile customers in the U.S.

Hopefully your clients will be cognizant of the time differences!! I've been awakened at 03:00 when travelling, and it's darn annoying! I normally use text msg. to keep in touch with family, and use voice calls VERY sparingly. I only provide my number to family members for the most part, but in your situation I suspect this will be a bit different.

Hope this helps? Cheers!
