internet

I've heard that most places in Europe are much more connected to the internet than the US is. My daughter is going to Lyon for 10 months to study, so I'm wondering if she'll have free internet access available.

Thanks Jennifer,
One of the main reasons for asking about internet access is for the possibility of using webcams to keep in touch. Do you (or anyone) know anything about that? TIA

If she's going to be studying, I assume there will be free access at the University, probably in the libaries. I spent a semester in London and internet was free to use at any computer on campus. There were several different labs available.

The family I lived with also let me use their computer, but that wasn't the case with a lot of the other foreign students.

If you really need a definite answer, have her contact the study abroad office that she's going through and they'll be able to tell you or have her contact past study abroad students.

Ernie-my daughter has been in Strasbourg since Sept and will be there till June. She is a regular student and lives in a dorm. Her dorm has interenet just like her college here in the states does. It took a few days to hook up but she took her laptop with her and it has worked fine. We all got webcams for Christmas and use it along with Skype to talk on a regular basis. Even without the webcam Skype is the way to go to keep in touch - 100% free and as long as both of your computers have a microphone you can talk with great quality (better than some cellphones).

Now if she will not have access to her own internet she'll have to go to an Internet cafe or the school computer center. My daughter used both of these before her Internet was connected. The cafes you pay for but she got on the school computers for free.

Hope this helps. BTW - my daughter has had a great time and we go to see her next week!
