International travel with CPAP machine

We are flying to Italy and have booked with Continental flights, one of which has EmPower. What type of adapter is needed to connect to this? We realize the airline can't guarantee that power is available, but we don't want to buy a battery pack to use on a single trip. (Not a true medical emergency--helps with sleep apnea.)

Are you really going to need it while on the plane? It's most likely dual voltage, so all you will need once there is a plug adapter (check the power supply to make sure it's rated to 240v).

Sally, I use my CPAP every nite, but never on the planes overseas. I have found that I can get by for a couple of nites before I notice any adverse effect. If I can't use my CPAP, I'll use a Breathe Right nasal strip. That works pretty good for a couple of nights. If this is your 1st time overseas with your CPAP make sure that you carry an extension cord; and three way plug, and plenty of adaptors. Especially in Italy. Many times the rooms have only one outlet, and they have it FULL! You will need to plug in an adaptor, the US 3way, then adapt the EU plugs to your 3 way, etc. I won't bother with an EU 3 way; they are too big an bulky to carry. So I carry adaptors that allow me to plug EU cords into my US 3 way plug. BTW, there are two different sized Italian EU plug adaptors...bring lots of both. One has small plugs, and the other has large plugs. Sometimes you find these two types one in room! If you use a humidifier make sure that the back says that it can run on both 110 and 120 (EU voltage) I leave my humidifier at home. Sweet Dreams!

Thanks Steve! The machine is for my husband, and he has agreed he probably won't need it on the plane after all. He always takes an extension cord, and we planned on an adapter, but weren't aware of the different size plugs in Italy. Also, we hadn't considered the older buildings with possibly fewer outlets. Your suggestions are really appreciated. Again...thanks!

If he uses distilled water in it, that can be purchased at a farmicia (pharmacy)
