International Sim cards

Traveling to 4 countries and need to be able to call the places where I will be staying. Will be in Europe for 6 weeks. To call back to the US, I can skype. I am considering just ordering a cheap phone from Amazon and an international simm card to use in Europe. Has anyone ever ordered one from Amazon, and will the simm card work in 4 countries? I don't feel like using precious vacation time to shop for a phone at my first stop, but if that's the best way, then I will. I'll take any comments, recommendations, and brand info... Thanks!! Kim

We got a Eurobuzz phone for this purpose for our July trip to several countries. Their customer service impressed us to bits. We received the phone about a month before leaving but didn't open the package until the day before. (Dumb-shouldn't have done that.) We realized it was accidentally missing a SIM card. They overnighted the SIM card that was needed to our first hotel in Berlin so it was there when we arrived. Check out their site, but I am a believer! :)

I think you're best off just getting a phone when you get to Europe. I considered buying a phone online before going to Europe but read too many reviews who said their phone was either not unlocked or didn't work at all. If it doesn't work, it's an expensive paperweight and you're left needing a phone. I paid 25 euros for a phone, SIM card, charger, and 10 euro worth of minutes (8 cents a minute). Buying it there (Spain) I was able to have the salesman set it up and make sure it worked before I left the store. 25 euro seemed to be about the going rate for a basic phone from Orange, Vodaphone and other competing companies.

I've gotten a phone off Amazon and even purchased the sim card off of Amazon. It worked okay...the phone was old, but functional. This past summer, though, I ordered a rental from Cellomobile. It was pretty cheap, came in the mail to my house, and once I turned it on in France, it was ready to go. When I got home, I just returned it using the label they provided. Really simple and the phone worked great. (I also spent the extra $5 and got a US number in addition to the European number it came with so that those at home could call me easily.)
