International drivers permit required for austrian and swiss car rental?

I am from India, and will be coming to austria-switzerland for 2 weeks on a tourist visa.
Do I need an IDP? Will rental car give car without IDP? My drivers license is in English

It will depend on what the rental company requires. Having an IDP would be a good idea, whether they actually require one or not. Check with the rental company to see what they require.

Tanveer, I've heard that an IDP is compulsory for Austria, but haven't been able to confirm the information. Most rental firms won't ask for it, however if you should be involved in any kind of an "incident" in a German-speaking country, it would probably be better to have an IDP. In my experience, not all Police officers in Europe are able to "function comfortably" in English. One point to note is that you WILL require a Tax "Vignette" for driving in Switzerland and probably Austria as well. Cheer!

You do need an IDP for driving in Austria, I don't know about Switzerland. Also, if you are planning to drive on the Autobahn in Austria, you will need a tax vignette. They are available upon entry into Austria on an Autobahn, but if you are renting the car in Austria, the vignette is probably already on the windshield.

You will also need the vignette sticker for Switzerland and it will be more expensive since they only offer an annual sticker. Austria offers a 10 sticker which makes it cheaper.
