International data plans?

Hello,

I will be travelling to Netherlands. France, Spain and Iceland over next few weeks. Ideally I would like to have access to internet on my phone when I am travelling. Would it be possible to buy international data packages that would work in these countries? I know that France and Iceland sell sim cards and data packages for tourists but is there any operator that sells packages that work in various countries?

Thanks.

The SIM cards and unlocked phones don't seem to be as advantageous as they once were. I have T-Mobile which I am pretty certain will work in these areas (go to their website and double check). I think I pay $10 a month for the plan and the phone calls are $0.20 a minute, data is free. AT&T has something similar.

uday029,

i would first check with your provider and see what you can get from them. I would make life simpler.

If not, you can get PAYG SIM cards.

just some comments;

  • if you get a foreign PAYG SIM, make sure you can add minutes to it when you leave the country. for my NL PAYG T SIM, all i need is internet and my paypal account.

  • on that NL T PAYG SIM, i can buy data time whenever i want. Its available in MB blocks. Don't know that that gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling, but it works for me.

happy trails.

A few points that you'll have to consider first.....

  • If your phone is not unlocked, you won't be able to use any other SIM cards.
  • Depending on which network you're with and the type of phone you're using, it may or may not work in Europe.
  • It may be difficult to top-up PAYG cards once you've left the country of purchase.

is there any operator that sells packages that work in various countries?

Yes! You could have a look at some of the travel phone firms such as Roam Simple, Cellular Abroad, Telestial, Mobal, EuroBuzz, One SIM, Max Roam or KeepGo (there are others). Data services tend to be on the "pricey" side with these, but basic voice and text is usually quite reasonable.

As someone else suggested, you may want to speak with the CS staff at your cell network, as using their international roaming plans may be quite reasonable (depending on usage).

I just got back and added intl data (300mb)' 50 texts and and 30 talk minutes for about $100... Definitely the way to go. It was enough for 3 weeks, I kept the data off expect when I needed it. And we had wifi everywhere we were staying, just used the data for maps and to look these up I needed to when out. I am really happy I did that rather than trying to get a SIM card there,
