International Blackberry

Has anybody tried the cellomobile.com International Blackberry rental? I would like to have a phone for occasional use, check my email, and use GPS for navigation. Going to drive in Spain, and train in France, Germany, and Italy. I'm not an inexperienced European traveler, just inexperienced with these new fangleded gadgets. :) Thanks!

Cindy, I've never used that particular service, so can't offer any feedback. It would help to know whether you presently have a Cell phone, and which network you're with? Travelling with "Smartphones" can be extremely expensive, so it's great that you're doing some research on the subject. You might want to check other Threads here on the HelpLine, as there are a lot of other posts on the subject of travel with Cellphones / Smartphones. Happy travels!

Hi Ken, I have a Droid with Verizon. According to the info I found on Verizon's website I can't use my Droid with them in Europe. I can get a rental phone with Verizon, but then I don't have email and GPS. I can down load Europe maps on my Garmin for $100. This Cellomobile blackberry would cost about $200 for the days I need it and would cover all my needs--if it really works. I have read the other posts but didn't find one about the Cellomobile Blackberry. I was hoping someone had tried it and could tell me if it was worth the money.
Thanks in advance!

Cindy, As you discovered, your Verizon Droid won't work at all in Europe, as it uses CDMA cellular technology, which is not compatible with the GSM technology used in Europe (and much of the rest of the world). I had a brief look at the website for Cellomobile and it appears to be a reliable firm (especially as they're listed by the BBB) and have no complaints. I'm not completely clear on their rate structure though? For weekly rental, they indicate rates of $79.99 and $129.99. Does that mean that the rental with unlimited data is actually $209.98 per week??? That would be far too expensive for me, so I'll continue to use a Netbook for E-mail and web surfing. If you decide to give them a try, be sure to post a note here as the information may be useful for others. Cheers!
