When I was younger I had my ear pierced in Peru the day after I went to Machu Picchu for the first time. In a similar vein I was thinking about getting tattooed my next time in Europe. Has anyone else done this? Any recommendations? Thoughts?
I have a few tattoos and in Europe there are numerous places to get tattoos BUT and this is a BIG BUT.I would never dream of getting a tattoo on my travels. The aftercare and management of your tattoo takes a fair bit of time and you need to be careful of what your do ,ie like no swimming .I have also ruined sheets at home after a tattoo leaving ink stains on sheets that just will not come out,now you don't want to be doing that to a nice hotel.
Also you need time to plan your tattoo and agree what is being done with the tattooist and actually make appointments.
Can't speak to Europe, but I got my first (and so far only) tattoo on a trip to New Zealand. I have no regrets and I LOVE having this amazing souvenir of a trip that changed my life. However...I would encourage caution for all the reasons mentioned by the previous poster. I went to a shop that was recommended to me by a local I trusted and who has had several tattoos done there. I did it when I was in the same city for 4 days so I had time to visit the shop and ask all my questions and make sure I was comfortable with what I was about to do. Then I made an appointment to come back later and actually have the tattoo done.
I also chose to do a small and simple tattoo in a location that would be safe and easy to keep clean and well moisturized and I did it near the end of my trip so that it would not affect other activities that I did in NZ. I knew I would be flying home with a 2 day old tattoo and for that reason I didn't want it on my shoulder blade or somewhere else where it could possibly get irritated sitting in an airplane seat for 12 hours. I chose my ankle because I was able to wear loose pants and low cut socks and keep putting the recommended cream on it throughout the flight. Your situation might be different (maybe your ankles swell on flights and you wear compression socks) so that's why I encourage you to think through these kinds of things carefully before you do it.
So in summary, I do think it can be done, but I would encourage you to do a lot of research and to plan very carefully. It would be terrible to have your fun souvenir ruin the rest of your trip because of infection or some other issue.
You should get the full 3 dose course of Hepatitis B vaccinations before getting a tattoo:
https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/diseases/hepatitis-b
Who is at risk?
Hepatitis B is most common in some countries in Asia, Africa, South
America and the Caribbean (see map). However, it occurs in nearly
every part of the world. The risk to most travelers is low, but
travelers could become infected if they have sex with an infected
person, receive a transfusion of unscreened blood, have medical or
dental procedures, get tattoos or piercings or receive acupuncture
with needles that are not sterile.
This CDC warning appears to be specified for even first world European countries such as the UK:
https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/united-kingdom
Health Information for Travelers to United Kingdom, including England,
Scotland, Wales, and Northern IrelandYou can get hepatitis B through sexual contact, contaminated needles,
and blood products, so CDC recommends this vaccine if you might have
sex with a new partner, get a tattoo or piercing, or have any
medical procedures.
You are likely from a different generation than me, but I just don't see tattoos as adding to a person's attractiveness.
geovagriffith , I was 56 years old when I got my first tattoo ( I am nearly 62 now), none of my are visable unless I take my shirt off or wear a sleeveless shirt. Personally I wished I had got a few done many years earlier than I did.
A friend went to high school and college in Syria and Lebanon. When he went to Jerusalem he gotba small crusader cross tattooed on his inner forearm. Apparently that was common for kids to do..
You asked for recommendations - skip the tattoo. Bring back a slate bowl or a bottle of Limoncello or some lace.
get what you want but not if impaired
My souvenir is always a hat-pin. I have maybe 300-400 at this point. I have 3 hats, with pins from different regions - one for US state and national parks, one for old Europe pins, one for new Europe pins.
Me as suveinro was asked to bring a thing for everyday life. I did not find anything, all the souvenirs - statues, masks, reminders of the place. Guys, there are ideas that order from the Internet is creative, which can not be found in stores and that it would be practical???
To me a tattoo can be either great or disastrous. Generally great tattoos are done by great artists. Those artists are in high demand and usually work on appointments that have been set up in advance and after a consultation to discuss what a person wants and, later, to approve or edit a design.
I think dropping in to get a souvenir tattoo is a bad idea because drop in tattoos are usually quite bad, something people regret rather than show off later.
