Insurance

We are 2 seniors (75 & 76) going to Spain and Italy for 6 weeks. How much "evacuation" and "medical" insurance is adequate. Is $50,000 medical and $100,000 evacuation per person sufficient ? Appreciate all suggestions.

The first thing you should do is to check your Medicare supplement policy, if you have one. Ours, for example, covers us for medical treatment anywhere. No reason to buy what you already have. $100,000 for evacuation seems adequate to me. It's what we get. Many insurance sources allow you to assemble pretty much your own package. Check Amex, if you have one of their cards, insuremytrip.com, and squaremouth.com.

Most travel policies have some medical evacuation coverage. But they USUALLY will only evacuate you to the nearest hospital that can treat you. There is a company named "Med Jet Assist" that has a number of different plans depending on age and length of journey. It is NOT medical insurance -- just med evacuation coverage. As long as you are more than 150 miles from home, they will, if medically necessary, fly you back to your home hospital in a medical jet with medical personnel. Google them (or call their toll free number) and see what they can offer you.
