Innsbruck vs Luzern?

After spending 5 nights in Bavaria and 5 nights in Salzburg area, we leave Salzburg by train on Sunday, Oct 2. Our friends fly out of Zurich on Tuesday at 2 PM and we fly out on Thursday at 2 PM. We are trying to decide the best use of our remaining time.

One idea is to take the scenic train route through Innsbruck and spend one night there on the way to Zurich. If we do that, our friends might stay in Zurich on Monday night and then fly out on Tues. We would go on to Luzern for Mon/Tues (maybe Wed?) nights.

But, I hate that they would miss the beauty of Luzern. Of course, it is up to them, but I am the de facto tour planner/guide and want to offer them the best! Any suggestions for them? I feel like they are throwing away a whole day by settling in Zurich for the night.

There is nothing too special about Innsbruck in my opinion. What is special is the central location surrounded by amazing mountains: you won't have time to explore them with just one night.
I would stay on the train from Salzburg all the way to Zürich, then head to Luzern. With a 2PM flight, your friends do not need to stay in Zürich the day before.

I agree with balso. Lucerne would be a much more scenic and interesting place to end their trip. Also the train from Lucerne direct to Zurich airport is only 1 hour. So, they can enjoy 2 nights in Lucerne. Zurich is ok, but doesn't have nearly the great look and charm of Lucerne. Have them Google images of Lucerne and it will be a quick sell. Enjoy!

ptlovesot. Another vote for Luzern. Innsbruck has name recognition, but the things to do there are not in the city. Luzern is on a lake amidst the mountains, so there's a lot to do there. But also note, that you can get to the Zurich airport by rail from Luzern in about 1.25 hours, so it makes it close enough to spend the last night there as well. Zurich is nice enough, but its a cosmopolitan big city, without the natural attractions of Luzern.
