Inn to Inn Hike ideas?

Hi All. Hoping to try some Inn to Inn (not hostel to hostel) hiking with my husband in September. We are moderate level hikers, would like to try a 4-7 day hike, in or near mountains, pretty decent weather (hope hope), carry our day packs, hire a company to schlepp the rest and maybe book rooms. We are in our 60's and also like small villages. We would like to generally limit days to 6-12 miles, depending on elevation gain. Thinking of France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Slovenia . . . Thanks for any ideas.

Do you want to walk part of the Camino in either Spain or Portugal? It is easy to book private rooms in hotels or pensions and arrange for bag transfer.

The Camino hikes I saw required much longer days, or a fair amount of time by busy roads. We'd like to limit to 6-12 miles a day. ☺️

We used two British companies in 2023, Inntravel and On Foot Holidays for inn to inn walking in France and Spain.

Both were good, they both do hotel bookings, luggage and provide maps and gpx files. If you look at their websites, they have a lot of detail about gradients and distances required. We particularly liked On Foot’s walk in the Dordogne which visited a number of Plus Beaux Villages - had some excellent meals on that trip too. On Foot are I think a smaller company and we found them more responsive. We used their shortening options on some of the longer walking days.

I have walked 6 Caminos. You can plan it how you like, with no road walking and the distances you prefer. Personally, I like 10-15km per day, which is very easy to plan. The infrastructure with hotels and bag transfer make it ideal for you.

We used InnTravel, https://www.inntravel.co.uk/, for a 7 day inn to inn trip in Italy. They made all the internal travel arrangements including baggage transfer and hotel reservations. They tailored their standard Italian Lakes trip to fit our schedule, so you aren’t limited to what they have listed on the website. All the hikes were self guided with very detailed maps and GPS instructions. I would use them again.

They are hills not mountains but The Cotswolds Way is beautiful, I've walked it more than once, and lots of options for transfers and accommodation

You can walk as much or as little as you want on a camino. You could complete the Camino Ingles in this amount of time, you could the last 100km of the French Camino, but it will be very busy. You could do a portion of the Central or Coastal portuguese camino. You can easily book private rooms and baggage transfers on these camino, like Ms.Jo said.
I am thinking of doing the Fisherman’s trail in southern portugal.

I can highly recommend On Foot Holidays having taken several trips organized by them, for the quality of the routes, the organization of logistics and the accommodations.

For something completely different: hiking on the fairly new Via Transylvanica in Romania. I recently read a blog post by two women who had done it, can’t dig it up right now but here is the official site. Last week, I spent 4 nights in Braşov, in Transylvania, and loved it. Thinking this hike would be great fun (not in February.) There is lodging all along the way, and outfitters if you don’t want to carry your luggage.

Trip report is in the works…but I highly recommend Transylvania and its fascinating history to all of you with independent travel experience.

EDIT: I found the link for the women who did the walking tour. It was in YouTube, not a blog post. This is the Romania most tourists never see and also a video about Braşov from the same women: The ultimate base for exploring Transylvania

Nelly--We were at the Rick Steve's travel show a month or so ago and there was a booth for Transylvania. We spoke to the owner of that tour and were fascinated with the country. Thank you for sharing this! I signed up for the newsletter and will be diving into it today.
