Info Please

We are staying at a B&B in Taormina. The room does not have a refrigerator. This is our first trip so I do not know if stores sell bags of ice like they do in the States. Do you have any suggestions as to how we can keep the food cold in our room?

If you would put the word Ice Cubes, Where to buy ice in Taorimina, or something similar in your title, then people would notice your post and be able to offer you some advice. Just writing "Info Please", isn't very specific and could be about anything at all.

Also, your post should be in the "To the Boot" section (which covers Italy), not the "General Europe" section.

You should also post this question on Trip Advisor's Taormina Travel Forum. There is a destination expert on that site who has a wealth of information. On all of our trips, we use this Helpline and Trip Advisor for great advice. You are going to love Taormina!

For the most part we only buy food that doesn't need to be cooled. Europeans use a lot less ice than the US. If that is important to you then get a portage cooler.

Lots of products in Europe are radiated and sold for long shelf-life. This includes soups, juices, milk, sauces... I tend to run to the store and stock up on smaller portions of stuff in that stay-fresh packaging. In Europe, it is much easier to find smallish package sizes, whereas in America is seems like everything comes in a Jumbo Pack! So it's possible to buy a carton of juice and a carton of soup and some cheese and a yogurt or two, drink the juice (cool from the refrigerated case if you just bought it, otherwise, room temp), heat the soup on the in-room microwave, spread the cheese on some bread, and feast on yogurt and fresh fruit for dessert... and then have no leftovers because you bought small packages. This tends to be what I count on doing when I travel. Schlepping ice to your room, even if you can find it, is messy. Another idea is just to ask the owner if they can make a few extra trays of ice for you! Worth a shot, anyway.

And you may find that the B & B will give you access to their fridge. But be aware that Europeans tend to shop daily and so their fridges tend to be smaller than ours......

You just reminded me of a trip memory I must have suppressed. That is, I use a LOT more ice than the Europeans I encountered did. LOL. We did a lot of picnics, so I know what you're talking about with trying to store the food. Occasionally, if we felt comfortable with it and it was only one small item, we would ask the B&B host if we could put it in their fridge. Most of the time, we didn't really try. We just bought enough food for that picnic and then went back to the store before the next picnic. When we returned to the States, my first stop was our hotel bar (we stayed overnight in DC) whereupon I asked for a HUGE glass of ice with my diet Coke!
