Jody, we stayed at Hotel Trastavere in 2005 and ended up with a bigger room (it was basically a small apartment) than we even needed -- which was okay with us! The website is http://www.hoteltrastevere.net/en/index.html. The rates are still pretty inexpensive (at least for Rome). It's in the charming neighborhood of Trastavere. Great restaurants in the neighborhood...

Hi Jody,
We have seen a Rick Steves episode of Travels in Europe in which he had taken a room in a convent, in Rome. That room looked quite comfortable and was, of course, very reasonably priced. We have no idea about exactly where to look, but if interested, we would begin looking via Google.com.
Have a great trip... P.
