toan,

You didn't give any price guidelines, so I'm not sure what you consider "inexpensive"?

I always stay at This Hotel in Munich and would certainly recommend it (the breakfasts are awesome!).

Cheers!

My daughter and I stayed at the Wombat Hostel short walking distance from the Main Train station.

I would definitely recommend it. I am a senior citizen and did not feel out of place amongh the youngsters. It was quite. We had a private room over looking the street. We would stay here again.

They also have them in Berlin and Vienna.

Agree with Ken...I've stayed at Hotel Uhland and always recommend it to fellow travelers looking for good lodging in Munich.

I'm not sure inexpensive and Munich belong in the same sentence. On my recent trip to Germany/Austria, I averaged $36/nt outside of Munich and $74 in Munich.

Although not a bad place, Hotel Uhland is not the least expensive place in Munich.

I agree that Wombats is a great place to stay. I stayed in a 6 person dorm and everyone was very quiet and respectful even when returning at 4 am...it is also very clean...

Thx for supplying Toan with the recommendation, JB. I’m putting Wombat’s on my list of places to check out the next time I’m in Munich. This place looks great, and it’s highly rated on tripadvisor. The rates are also very good…looks like inexpensive and Munich can belong in the same sentence. And, I'll still recommend Uhland for those looking for a great hotel (instead of a hostel) at a reasonable rate!

I may add that they had a very nice breakfast. The place is very clean as was all hostels in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Pull Wombats up on Google and you can see how close it is to Munich Hbf also to other sites in the area.

Any additional suggestions? I'll also be heading to Munich during the first week of June 2010, but the Wombat appears to be booked at that time. I'm amazed at the prices I've seen so far. Thanks to all!

Ashley - did you attempt to book the Wombat hostel online or did you send email. It's really early to be booking that far ahead and some hotels/hostels don't even have prices loaded into their reservation systems yet. So a message to the effect of "All Booked Up" might actually mean "we've not loaded prices in yet".

WE also liked the Hotel Uhland but the Munchner Kindl was nice too.

Tim, I did try to book via their Web site but will be contacting them shortly through e-mail. I generally book my lodging extremely early if I can secure a great deal ... just a habit I've developed over the years. Plus, it gives me more tangible planning milestones to keep me excited about a trip all year (not that I need much help on that). Thanks for your help!

ashley check hostelworld.com as they have a few hostels listed there that were scored just as high as Wombats. I think it was the EuroYouth Hostel?

Thanks, I'll check them out again. I'd looked a bit awhile ago, but was pretty surprised at the prices I saw. Then again, I'm learning that I'll have to readjust my idea of "budget" for Munich :)
