Independent travelers with 1 now unable to go walk much-where should we go?

We have traveled independently to many European countries, including Austria, Germany, Norway, Budapest, Greece, Slovenia, Albania & Italy. Now I can't walk up, down, or far. We still want to travel & are content with staying close to our lodging. We still thirst for travel! Where can we go?

While I am now of retirement age, we're able to do independent travel. My wife was in a wheelchair this past Spring, but we still went on a repositioning cruise to England and flew over to Ireland for a week. Thankfully I'm still strong. She's since had a knee replacement and is ready to hit Europe walking on her own.

We're saving guided tours until we are not so mobile. They have the resources to deal with mobility challenged people.

I would recommend a River Cruise. Most of the ships dock very close to the center of the towns that they visit. In essence, you have a floating hotel that travels to multiple cities and countries. You don’t have to worry about trying to find restaurants. If you want to learn more, take a look on YouTube for River Cruises.

We traveled this past summer with a friend who had a knee replacement. The easiest part of our trip was in Tuscany. We stayed at a B&B with a great cooking class and relaxing grounds. We rented a car, went wine tasting, visited the hot springs and spa and Siena. Having the car made it easy to travel without too much wear & tear on my friend’s needs.

I also saw the other recommendation for river cruise and it is also a great choice.

We've traveled with family groups (ages 18 to 89!) on a couple of river cruises. One thing we found is that the cruise director often offered choices, based on activity levels, for the included tours. For example, we walked to visit sites in Dresden while those with more limited mobility went on a bus tour for the same length of time. You could speak with representatives from a couple of cruise companies to get their recommendations for cruises that might best suit you.

The question I have is how far you can walk. Do you mean 100 meters or a kilometer at a time? Can you walk across a bridge with some incline? Can you get on buses?

Spain? Much of Andalucia - Sevilla, Cordoba, Cadiz, Jerez, Malaga - is generally level. So is Valencia and a lot of Barcelona.
France? Most of Paris is level, Strasbourg and Colmar too. Dublin?

You’ve listed some places where you’ve previously been. If you give us some names of cities or area you’d like to see next and how you prefer to travel from location to location (rental car, train, etc.) I’m sure we can come up with with some ideas. When I look at your list I notice that England, France and Holland and many other places are missing. Give us some ideas for what you are hoping to see next and we can offer specific suggestions based on our experience with terrain and distances.

You say you thirst for travel but what do you want to see and do while there?

I've always thought that if I became less mobile or 90 I would stay in a central hotel in Paris and just sit in a cafe and a park near the hotel and watch people; also near patisseries and boulangeries and fromageries, etc.

-- Don't have to wait til we're 90 ... 70 works just fine.

Go where there is excellent bus transportation and water transportation. Even consider locales with excellent and extensive transportation up/down mountains if Alpine vistas interest you. Let's start with the time of year you want to travel, if you don't mind the heat of summer (with no a/c), if you are able to travel during shoulder season or off season so you can avoid the mobs of tourists who can disrupt your trip, your interests, etc. I think you might be surprised about how many choices you have!
