where would you go and why? I'm following in Abraham's direction with this one. I'm so interested to hear what everyone has to say!
Ireland
Positano,Italy
Austria - One week just was not enough to enjoy Vienna and Salzburg and the Salzgammergut region.
Also, when I was there in July last year I was not able to do the Grossglockner (rain and snow in July!) so that would be yet another reason to go back.
Vlams Brabant province in Belgium, and not come back... because that's where my fiancee and I are going to settle...
Claudia & Nancy,
Why Positano? Why Ireland? Both are on my "to go to" list.
Ireland -- the plan for my next trip there is to explore the northwest and northern parts. On previous trips I've spent more time in the south and west.
I would do a Germany trip because my family is from there. I'd want to hit up Munich, Berlin, and Dresden specifically.
Hi Shannon,
I'd have to say the Dolomite region in Italy. Stunning scenery, quaint villages, beautiful old towns (Brixen, Sterzing, Bruneck, etc.) friendly people, good food and I'll mention it again... spectacular scenery.
Paul
I'd go to Scotland for the people, including family, the history, the mountains, the music, and the whiskey. And I'd sneak over to Ireland and England to visit more family.
Pam
Ireland, without a doubt. Even though we really like Italy, France and England, it would be Ireland for the friendly people, scenery, the music and the craic. We are going again next year with our children to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary and I certainly hope it isn't our last trip to Europe.
If I could only take ONE more trip to Europe, I would do the RS Best of Europe in 21 days plus a few more days at the beginning and end because you get a lot of bang for your buck. Since the Best of Europe doesn't go to the UK, I would probably leave Paris via the Eurostar at the end of the tour and go to London for a few days and go the south of England (Cornwall) and then fly out of Heathrow or Gatwick. I could revisit some places that I would like to see again plus some new places. I'm going to Ireland next year but the following year I may do the Best of Europe. I will be 62 and who knows what can happen. Happy travels!
Germany. The scenery was beautiful, the beer was great, the people were friendly and I felt strangley at home there even though both of my german grandparents were born in Canada. every house and restaurant smelt like my Grandma's house!
Only one?! Probably France....fascinating people, beautiful language, varied scenery and amazing history!
To Sweden, IRELAND, England and France...........
My Family lives in Sweden....it is charming.....I fell in love with Ireland and want to go again!
Soooooo much to see in England and France..........
Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter, it would have to be anywhere in the Alps.
Tuscany in the Fall. Staying in a countryside "villa" (read small cottage), eating Truffle laced pasta and wild boar procuttio, savoring the last of the summer's mellons and smelling the smoke of grape vine fires in the evening. Soaking up art in Florence and the countryside chapels, sitting in the sun and sipping wine. Ah, Tuscany....
If I could go to only one country, I would choose Greece. I would go to an uncrowded island. I like that Mediteranean environment, and the special light in the sky at Greece, and complacent people at islands of Greece.
Wow, this is a tough one, and I haven't been all over Europe, but I guess I just have to cop out and say Paris. It would totally satisfy me.
Venice by boat.
Ireland, France, Amalfi Coast
If only one. I'd probably do something like the Rick Steve's best of Europe but make it at least 90 days and see more of everything. At least 90 days because any days in non-Schengen countries wouldn't count against me when I left.
Marie,
You're making me miss Tuscany even more...we were just there last month.
It was our first trip to Italy and it is now in serious contention with Greece
as my favorite country. It was incredible! I llllooovvveeeedd Siena.
You can just bury me in Murren, Switz.
One last trip... I would still go to the UK and the Republic of Ireland. After over 12 trips, there is so much I still want to see and even more places to revisit. I'd go to The Black Isle, Islay and Skye and I'm ashamed to say I haven't been to the Lake District yet. There are many ruined abbeys and castles to be seen and cream teas to be eaten.
It would start and end in Paris....it's still the city of light, and that's where I fell in love with Europe....
Shannon, I would drive the wine route in eastern France. It has the most lovely little villages with flowers everywhere displayed in sleds, carts and around water fountains. BEAUTIFUL!
France, for the history, for the food, for the scenery, France is big enough that is satisfys me in every way , big cities ( Love Paris) , small villages, the mountains, the seaside, there is something for everyone.
Luxembourg
1) I've never been.
2) All of you will be in France, Italy, Ireland, Scotland, etc....so it will be nice and peaceful in Luxembourg.
I would go on a heritage tour for my kids (it would take at least 4 weeks), which would include:
Ireland, England, Scotland, Norway, France, Germany, and Switzerland.
I'd add Italy, because we aren't Italian, but we are Catholic (at least the kids and I are.)
