ideas

we finish a river cruise in Budapest and scheduled our return flight home out of Frankfurt five days later. We will have spent 2 days and 1 night in Budapest. Any good ideas how to fill the 5 days? We have thought about Croatia but there doesn't seem to be a easy way to get there from Budapest. Vienna and Munich are also possibilities. I know this is a vague question but any ideas will be appreciated.

You will have spent two days and one night in Budapest and, as I understand it, you are looking for somewhere else to go? Are you kidding? Budapest is the place to be!
Once you arrive, the charms and uniqueness of Budapest will tantalize you like no where else.
Budapest is, by far, my favourite city on the planet. Great food, wonderfully friendly people and endless adventures await you. Vienna, Munich? Forget it....you are already in paradise!
Trust me.

I recently spent 6 nights in Budapest (my first time there) and I could have stayed longer and hope to get back again. I would suggest an additional 2 days in Budapest then 2 days in Vienna, then travel back to Frankfurt and spend the last night in Frankfurt.

No, it isn't easy to get to Croatia from Budapest. Last time we went we took the bus to the border and a friend picked us up. We were staying in Ivanić Grad which is near Zagreb. Zagreb is a lovely city and has flights to Frankfurt for your return. 5 days may be too much, even with a day trip to Plitvice Lakes. You could definately spend the time in Budapest, it is a lovely city with much to see and do.

Two days is nowhere near long enough to cover Budapest. I too would add more time there. I had a week and I didn’t cover everything.

One:

Stay in Budapest. I just spent a full week playing tour guide in Budapest and we didn't finish.

Two

2 Days in Budapest and 3 days via Wizz Air or Ryan Air as suggested above. Most of the discount carriers are going to be dependent on the day of the week.

So you go to Google Flights and you enter ONE WAY, From: BUD, To: EUROPE, Stops: NONE, and the proper date for your departure from Budapest. Make a note of the available destinations that interest you.

Now do the same thing but From: FRA on the date you need to be in Frankfurt to see how many of the same destinations pop up. Any destinations in common are possibilities. Kiev will be one for instance.

Three

A lot easier, rent an apartment in Budapest, pick a wine region and in addition to Budapest spend a few nights in Eger or Pecs.

We've been on to river cruises that stopped or started in Budapest and we also spent one extra day in budapest and I would say we hardly touched this wonderful city! Find a hotel away from the river and explore the rest of Budapest. We stayed on the Pest side near the Opera House. Definitely take a tour of the Opera house. Also in that area is a fantastic book store, but go up to the coffee house on the 2nd floor and have a coffee or drink late in the afternoon and enjoy the music. Also go to a bath house. I understand the Parliment building is fantastic, but not easy to get the ticket to tour the inside.

Agreed. You will barely have arrived in Budapest which is a wonderful city with so much to offer. Stay there longer!! You can take a day trip to Szentendre or somewhere for one of the days . . .
