Remember the flight cancellations last spring? Well, if you have a flight to northern Europe scheduled soon... the current eruption has so far caused cancellations only for planes coming from and to the northern UK and Ireland. But the latest news shows that part of the ash cloud is moving towards the Netherlands, northern Germany and southern Scandinavia. For anyone traveling in the next few days, hopefully this won't cause nearly the same problem that it did last year. At least Grimsvötn is easier to pronounce than last year's Eyjafjallajökull. And to make this a question: How will this affect your plans?
Tom, I won't be leaving until late August, so I haven't started worrying about flight disruptions yet. My first stop will be Heathrow and then a connecting flight to Edinburgh. If the the disruptions continue to be limited to northern parts of the U.K., I may have to resort to train or Bus from Heathrow to Edinburgh (provided I can at least get to Heathrow). A lot can change in the next few months, so will see what the situation is in the middle of August. Cheers!
I'm leaving in less than two weeks...very scared. I don't think travel insurance covers acts of God. Do you think so?
We are leaving for Italy in less than two weeks. We are flying British Airways and connecting at Heathrow so I am hoping that the eruption does not disturb our plans, unless it keeps us in Italy longer!
Partiamo domani per Italia. Only hope we can skirt the clouds. Our flight is first to Madrid, connecting to Napoli. Can only wait and see. Flights today departing normally.
I'm supposed to leave for London on Sunday. This was a last-minute trip so I won't be devastated if I don't get to go. But luckily I bought travel insurance 2 days before the eruption. I have held off on making a couple of purchases related to the trip (like Cirque du Soleil tickets) just in case I can't go. Of course I'd rather be stuck over there than stuck here.
Our plans are all for June so hopefully we'll be fine by then. I've been dreaming to see Herbert Groenemeyer for 25 years so if I had to miss his concert in Leipzig I'd be really really bummed. But the real issue for me is the scheduled flight for my 13 year old daughter in late June. Fortunately it's a direct flight to FRA where she'll be picked up right at the airport but I really hope she is not getting stranded somewhere on her own ...
Five friends and I have a flight scheduled for tomorrow through Iceland Express where we had expected to travel from New York to Reykjavik, Iceland and then proceed to Copenhagen, Denmark. We now have to play our arrival completely by ear. Worst of all, we paid ~$150 in train reservations through raileurope last week to get to Berlin the night of our arrival. Now we may miss the train we reserved and lose the reservation since raileurope makes non-refundable/non-exchangeable reservations. Does anyone have experience or advice on how to request a refund if we miss our reservation due to a flight delay? We were told by a customer relations personnel that we could get the reservation tickets invalidated and send them to the headquarters once we return from our trip with documentation from the airline that our flight was canceled. Then they would consider our request. It seems like a long-shot. All in all, this is a pain. On the bright side, perhaps we'll get delayed in Iceland and see the ash-spewing volcano!
Looks like the eruption is puttering out. Probably no need to worry any further.
