Looking at Icelandair from Chicago to Switzerland I see a 45 minute layover time in Reykjavik. I am taking it that this is an OK connection with checked luggage and all. Any thoughts on this. Thanks, Jim
If you're flying Icelandair all the way, they'll get you to Switzerland. Schedules are not always set in stone.
If you fail to make the connecting flight are there further flights in the next few hours to get you to your destination or might you have to bunk in Iceland overnight?
We have flown several times with Icelandair. We have never missed a connection, even the 45 minute layovers. They will hold the plane for an incoming flight.
They do a good job connecting people to flights in that small airport, we've never had a problem from Seattle, which must be a longer flight than yours.
They know what they're doing there in KEF.
I have done it 3 times
Have done this 8 times. It is easy.
Agree, this has been the case for me as well. icelandair will hold the next plane. Besides, their planes always seem to be delayed anyway. ;)
I've flown through Reykjavik eight times now (my last four round trips, two on Wow Air, two on Icelandair). Seven of them weren't an issue. You can get through the small airport quickly and I haven't heard disasters about bags (but I carry-on only).
On the way to Europe, there's an added bonus. Iceland is a Schengen country; you will get your passport stamped there (I've never waited in a line longer than a few people). If your destination is Schengen, you can walk straight to transportation when you deplane at your destination (unless you checked bags). This can be a two hour time saving when arriving in Europe.
In my experience if you're running a little late, the connecting flight will be waiting for you - but you will have to go straight there without stopping for lunch/shopping in the airport.
The one flight that was an issue was when I left Paris maybe two hours late on Wow Air. They couldn't take off because the runway in Reykjavik was closed for high cross winds. We finally got there but connecting flights for about 60 people had already left (some flights were still there waiting). They took us to a hotel, fed us meals and put us on flights the next day. It was inconvenient but not as bad as getting stuck in the US with an American carrier that won't give you anything without first arm-wrestling for it. I still have a handful of Facebook friends from being stranded overnight in Iceland.
The one thing I'd advise, if you're flying through Iceland, make sure you have a good coat and maybe a ski hat and gloves with you. If you spend any time on the ground, you will likely miss them if you don't have them. Winter gear in Iceland is crazy expensive. If price is no object, it's the best. I shrunk a sweater in my laundry in France and spent 160 euros buying a replacement in Paris because it would have been almost twice that in Iceland.
THANKS all for the info. Jim
