Iceland transportaion

Hello, Will be in Iceland for a couple of days next fall on our way home from England. Looking at the cost of transportation, airport transfers, trip to the Blue Lagoon, it seems I could save money by renting a car for a couple of days as all our transportation costs will be X4 as there are four of us travelling. Have spent a few days in Iceland in the past and the driving looks pretty straight forward and no traffic to speak of. Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Jeff

We rented (from Sixt) on our week in Iceland last April, as we wanted to be able to do our own Golden Circle drive, and perhaps go skiing or snowshoeing on our own. The main highways (in April) had relatively light traffic, people drove in a safe and controlled manner, and the road surfaces were in good condition. Take note that strong winds can close a highway, and there are digital road signs stationed where high winds can be expected, alerting you (in meters per second) of wind speed and potential hazards ahead.

Rental rates were higher than you'd find in England, but the alternative is signing up for a guided tour from an outfitter or tour company, or using the ubiquitous Gray Line bus tours. We opted for a 4-wheel drive SUV, as we wound up taking some steep secondary roads, where good traction was more challenging. In summer, or if sticking to main highways, 2-wheel drive might be sufficient. You'll find larger, more American-type vehicles than you'd find in other parts of Europe. Speed limits are also slower. Seat belts are compulsory for all passengers, and the driver is liable if a passenger isn't belted in.

Yes, I would say that unless you plan on pretty much staying in Reykjavik the whole time, you would be better off renting a car instead of taking a bus to/from the airport and to out-of-the-city destinations like the Blue Lagoon or the Golden Circle drive. It will likely be less expensive than multiple bus fares for four people -- plus, it's nice being able to do things at our own pace, and driving in a foreign country is part of the adventure :)

One hint about the Blue Lagoon... it has a limited capacity, determined by the number of available lockers. Once it fills, they only admit additional guests as others leave. On a weekday in May, I arrived early and walked right in. However, by the time I left about three hours later, the entrance queue snaked out the door. Lesson- get there near opening time or be prepared to wait.

Tom, great advice. Haven't been to the Blue Lagoon in many years, and we took a tour bus. We'll plan an early arrival. Thanks again!

The roads are well maintained and have very little traffic on them, so driving is easy. I was there the last week in May and snow kept some roads in the east of the island closed.
