My husband and I are leaving for Europe via Iceland next week. We have decided to rent a car to drive the Golden Circle rather than take a tour bus as we originally planned. Has anyone had a recent experience renting a car in Reykjavik? We will be taking the bus to and from the airport in Keflavik and only need the car for one day. Do you know of a rental agency where we could pick up and return the car in Reykjavik rather than from the airport?
We've just started planning a trip there next Spring, and searching Rick's travel forums for previous posts on Iceland included one from Matt in July 2013, suggesting islandiacar.com -- we haven't used them, as we've not yet been to Iceland, but check them out. Hopefully the volcanoes stay relatively quiet for all of us for awhile ;-)
Just checked the web site. They will deliver and pick up the car at a hotel or guesthouse in Reykjavik.
Let's see if the board will let me post this time...
On our trip last month, we rented a car for a day with Hertz (they have an office about a 30-minute walk or a short bus ride from the center of Reykjavik, close to The Pearl). In my research at least, I found few agencies that would rent for less than 24 hours - we just wanted to do the Golden Circle drive - so we went with Hertz for that reason. Had a good experience and would recommend using them.
Thanks everyone. Anna, since our intention is the same, I will check Hertz.
Upon further checking the rates look a bit better. Economy car. $92,/day through Iceland Air. and $109. through AAA.
