Iceland/Ireland

Hello, we are planning a trip to Iceland and Ireland.
Iceland: I have already read quite a bit information and was looking for your expert advice on things not to miss. We were planning on staying in Reykjavik while in Iceland at either a guest house or possibly an apartment. Was wondering if there are tours others have taken that they recommend, great sights, car rentals, restaurants, etc. We are a family of 4, my girls will be 12 and 14 at the time of the trip and we are avid hikers as well. We will be travelling in July. Any suggestions, advice or things we should and should not miss would be appreciated.

Ireland: We wish to travel the south and west coast with a bit of time in Dublin and a day by train up to Belfast. We are having a difficult time narrowing down where to make our home port(s) for the 2 weeks. We will be renting a car, and doing some hiking. So any national parks, scenic trail advice would be very welcome. Thank you for your time in answering our queries and questions.

Hi Tania,

As mentioned in this thread, the geology of Iceland is quite unique:

When I was in Ireland last June, and visited the Antrim Coast and the Burren, I was really struck by how much the landscape and geology resembled that of Iceland (i.e. the basalt rock formations). The Viking also had a presence in Ireland as well.

Combining theses two countries brings to mind some really interesting themes that would work well for such a trip. How long in total will you have?? Can you squeeze at least 3 weeks for the two?

Hi Diane, we should be able too. The fourth week in Paris will be the pass off if money is tight. It will most likely depend on what budget we can afford. There is also an offer with either Iceland air or Airlingus (can't remember which at the moment) where you can do a stopover in Iceland if your flying from Toronto to Ireland. I will have to see if this is still available when we travel. Last summer we did 3 1/2 weeks, and we loved it. The girls had a great time. Thanks so much for your advice, we are actually heading your way in a couple weeks to skate on the canal!! Love Ottawa!! Take care and if you think of anything, please send it along, it will be greatly appreciated.

Have a wonderful day!
