i-pod question

I'm new to this, so bear with me. I've heard that once you load stuff onto your i-pod, you can't load stuff using a different computer without losing the original stuff. True? So can I put my current i-pod stuff on a friend's computer, then re-load it onto the i-pod along with new stuff (movies mostly)? And since I'm pretty computer illiterate, and I'm not sure how much my friend knows about this stuff, where can I get step-by-step directions (for the CI that I am) on how to do this? Thanks, Elaine

Elaine,
You are correct you can only Sync it to one computer. If you sync it to any other computer you will loose all the previous content of the iPod from the first computer.

You can dock it to mu;tiple computers just can't add content from multiple computers and keep the previous content.

And yes you can do a back up of your library and restore it on to your friends computer. You will then have to activate your friends computer to play your purchased content but only if your library contains purchased content. It is really easy to activate the computer on your account. Just play the purchased content and it will pop up with the activation screen.

The help section of iTunes will give you step by step walk through of the back up and restore of your music library.

Hope this helps!

You can plug your iPod into multiple computers without losing things. When you plug it into your computer and it shows up on the sidebar, click on the little picture of the ipod and the Summary page comes up (Or it may come up when you plug it in). At the bottom of that page is a box you can check that says Manage Music Manually. Check that box and that means you always have to take something off if you want it off. It will not automatically sync with whatever computer it gets plugged into.

elaine,

Given your location, I'm assuming you are using a PC to connect to your IPod?

As far as I know, IPod's can only be synchronized with one (or possibly two?) computers (ie: a desktop and a Laptop?).

Also any music purchased through I-Tunes can be loaded on a maximum of two computers. It appears that the music files are "linked" to the computers in some way? I know this from experience as I have had to replace both my desktop and Laptop computers in the last few years, and I had to contact I-Tunes to have the files "enabled" for the new computers (both are Macintosh models).

If I find any other information on IPod's, I'll post another note.

Cheers!
