I need help!?

I am planning a five month trip with my sister and I am asking for any help you can offer. What are some must see places? Experiences that I simply can't miss? Or any favorite places to overnight. Please don't comment on length of time, my circumstances are different then normal and I don't need comments on that. Thanks in advance.

Are travelling all over Europe? My favorites are Ireland and Greece (the islands). Rome has incredible sights to see. Also anything that is unique, that you won't find anywhere else, Venice comes to mind. Paris is never a bad idea.

Might help if you let us know your interests, everyone will have something different.

We are planning on starting in Lisbon, Portugal and then going all the way around most likely and then leaving from either northern Spain or ireland. I love museums and just general sight seeing. My sister is more of the exciting experiences like hikes and different things like that.

Even if your circumstances are different, it would be helpful for you to state that you do understand the limitations of the Schengen zone visa or that you are a non-US citizen and it does not apply. Otherwise we are going to ask the question. Second, roughly which months?

I am a non US citizen and I understand the schengen zone.

I don't know if this will be helpful, but I'll give it a go.

I loved - LOVED - Tuscany in Italy. I also loved Sicily, Rome & Cortina d'Ampezzo. (Tuscany - wine. Relaxation. Beauty. Think Orvieto. Sienna. Florence.)

Munich was magical. (Check out the trains. See the zoo! Definitely do Marienplatz and the church with Satan's footprint.)

I loved the story of Oberammergau.

I enjoyed Salzkammergut b/c of the salt mines.

There's so much I've loved in Europe. I'm not sure how to best direct my comments.

I’ve been all over but my favorites in order are:
Paris, Sorrento (Italy), Assisi (Italy), Murren in the Swiss Alps (hiking, paragliding, scenery), Bruges (Belgium), York (England), Hampton Court Palace (just outside London), Edinburgh and London (for the history - not the city itself).

Also I will roughly be going from the end of March till the Beginning of September not sure of year yet but I obviously need to plan a bit.

Plan your trip to the weather you can expect (but never comes with a guarantee!). Spring and autumn are best for southern Europe, summer for the north. It would be better if you could shift it a few weeks: mid April to early October.

With that timing, and assuming you want to spend an appreciable amount of time on the Iberian Peninsula, I'd suggest starting in Andalucía (Seville, Cordoba, Granada, Ubeda/Baeza, Ronda, etc.) since April is usually warmer there than just about anywhere else. Then work your way north (and west into Portugal). The northern coast of Spain is great in mid-summer when the rest of the country can be hotter than ideal.

Sorry to be boring, but you said "I understand the schengen zone.", but the post above says "We are planning on starting in Lisbon, Portugal and then going all the way around most likely and then leaving from either northern Spain or ireland.".

If you are a non-EU citizen (for example Canadian), you are limited to 90 days in the Schengen Area (unless you get a visa), that is everywhere discussed here apart from the UK or Ireland. That implies you spend 2 months+ in the UK and Ireland.

"going from the end of March till the Beginning of September" - I make that just over 5 months.

Must see places. I would start down south (Spain, Portugal, Italy), move north for July and August (France, Germany, Scandinavia). If you do city-hopping, if you choose to chain together cities 2-4 hours apart by train that would be optimal.
With this much time, you could get a car for 1-2 months to explore rural areas and small towns.France, Germany, Czech and others have lost of rural areas with small towns that are not in any (English-Language) guidebook. If you hire a car, you need to return it in the same country.
I could list more, but it would take pages.

I'd recommend 2-3 weeks in Scotland. There are plenty of great hikes and of course Edinburgh. June is a great month for this - so much daylight! Or if you like the performing arts more than you hate crowds, attend the Edinburgh Festival in August.

I don't know if you like horses, but If you're in Vienna in the spring or fall, you could plan to attend a performance of the Lipizzaner stallions at the Spanish Riding School.

One place I didn't overnight but would have liked to is Giverny, France. Monet's garden in April was one of the most memorable experiences of my life (second to the Moss Temple in Kyoto, Japan in November) and you want a few minutes before the crowds show up. See as many of his paintings in Paris as you can before you go - especially the water lilies in the Orangerie.

I agree with two of the previous posters. A week in Anadalucia (south of Spain) would be wonderful and I also highly recommend Murren in the Jungfrau region of Switzerland. There is so much more to visit in Switzerland that I'd recommend staying at least another week and even then you'd have to pick and choose where to spend time. I'd recommend four nights in Zermatt and another 3 around Lake Geneva. A night in Gruyere is nice. I'd also want to visit Lucerne for a few nights. Basel is our favourite location. Simply beautiful.

We love Paris and have visited twice (5 nights and 4 nights) and plan to visit again for 6 nights as there are so many things we've haven't seen. The Alsace region is also beautiful (and only an hour from Basel Switzerland if you want to combine the two).

We love Ghent in Belgium. Spent 6 nights there and visited Bruges and Ypres (daytrip to the battlefields).

With five months I'd also visit Greece. We haven't visited yet but had planned to until I realized we didn't have enough time this summer. To visit just a few islands and see what we wanted I figured we needed about a 3 week visit. It would depend on which islands and ferry schedules.

I'd return to Italy in a heartbeat. We had six nights in Rome and it was just about perfect but I'd love to visit Amalfi coast, Cinque Terre and Venice.
